Oral Thrush - Self Help

I’ve been told by the doctors that I have oral thrush as I suspected I did.

I’ve been prescribed Fluzionole Tablets for 14 days and Corsodyl Mouthwash.

Has anyone any idea how I can help my self with getting rid of this or with foods that don’t taste dreadful? I’m having massive problems with taste and texture of food, everything tastes wrong and weird and feels odd.

I’ve got a burning feeling from my upper throat down (not indigestion) which feels like I’ve just eaten a vindaloo.

Any advice appreciated and thanks xxxx

hi El Katrano
I too suffered from that last chemo and the tablets really helped so stick with it .The mouthwash was good but it is ineffective if used straight after brushing your teeth and it tastes foul-I found pineapple juice helped as well-Feel free to pm me -hope info helps

I got some Nystatin drops that you put in your mouth 4 times a day. I started them on Friday and still have a bit of a yucky mouth but it is getting better, slowly. Its the lack of saliva that makes things worse I think. For me, fizzy water helps with getting rid of the yucky taste, or chewing gum if your mouth isn’t too sore. I finished chemo 3 weeks ago, so am hoping that it will go soon.

Hope you get some relief from yours soon.

I was advised by my chemo nurse to rinse my mouth out with 1 teaspoonful of veg oil first thing in the morning so stimulate the saliva. I also brushed my teeth with a baby toothbrush and Beverley Hills gum strengthening toothpase after everything I ate. It seemed to work as I had minimal oral problems when on chemo. The vegetable oil isn’t as bad as you think.

Poor you - I remember how painful and upsetting the raw throat and furry mouth were. Nystatin was the only thing that worked for me. It tasted foul but a few days later I felt a whole lot better.

One thing that really helps to get rid of thrush is cutting out sugar. Those bacteria feed on it. It’s something I’ve been quite prone to over the years but since I’ve cut out refined sugar 4 or 5 months ago now, I’ve not had it once. xxxx

Hi ElKatrano,

once again I know what you are going through, my mouth was very bad with thrush, coated white and very sore every time I had tax (6 in total), the anti biotics were given to me by my onc as a precautionary thing, but I still got the thrush, Nystatin is very good, Difflam is another good one, but be careful because it feels like it is burning, Gel-Clar is good too,

I completely lost my taste and was thoroughly miserable and in pain for quite a few days, my taste never really recovered between treatments, as for the vegetable oil, I couldnt stand anything greasy I would physically heave, so I would be careful there,

It sounds revolting but I found brushing my tongue and the inside of my mouth with a soft toothbrush helped, removing the white fur seemed to ease the pain, but dont brush too hard.

Its vile, but there isnt much else you can try, I didnt get ulcers but a lot of ladies have,

all the best it will pass, but take the anti-biotics because you need to attack from inside as well as trying to do something to ease the external symptoms too.

love Liz xxxx

I’ve been back to the hospital, got gelclair, omeprazole for the burning and told it can be a week before oral thrush clears up on fluzanole - bugger.

I spoke with my BCN about preventing this happening AGAIN once it’s clear as it’s so horrible and miserable.

She’s said it’s worth trying Probiotic yogurts to put back some of the good bacteria that the chemo kills off, because not having the good bacteria leaves people open to more problems such as thrush, stomach upsets, diahorrea etc. So worth a shot - thought I’d share this for others!

My diet sheet tells me to avoid live yogurt on chemo. Something about the risk of bacteria.

Really?? Its not on mine.
Well, think I’m going to risk it if I’ve already had bad thrush, may be worth the risk.

Yep, it’s up there along with seafood etc. The chemo nurse had mentioned it before, but this is the one they gave me when I was admitted.

I was also told to avoid probiotic yoghurts. Which I did. I didn’t however avoid out of date mascarpone cheese and I paid for that mistake, but that’s another story!

Hope yours is clearing up. After a week on nystatin drops mine is definitely getting better though I still have a very dry mouth.

Hi glad was not just me I’ve had a wk of thrush but also been given a wk of the tabs if it turns up this time had everything else nothing works I can’t stand yougart but my chemo unit told me to eat live youg and pineapple the drops make me feel sick so I can’t have them i think we have to just wait for it to pass and hope we don’t get it this time tc Laura

Yeah, wouldn’t wish this on anyone, it’s N-a-s-t-y.

Probiotics/Live Yogurt fine apprently, though why you can have that but can’t have cheeses that are live is beyond me.

I’m hoping that it won’t come back at all now! xxx

I’ve had persistent thrush (was prone to it before chemo), and it’s all down the oesphagus… My chemo unit say a big NO to probiotic yoghurts in case the live bacteria grow unhealthy cultures in the gut… for what it’s worth. I take Fluconazil and it works - became immune to Nystan!

You noticed everyone gets told different things in different units?

Another oral thrush victim here, got it with my last TAX. I got Nystatin to take four times a day and was told that it takes about a week to clear so I’ll drink every last drop in the bottle.
It’s painful and horrible, makes eating anything a struggle.
In terms of eating, I could really only manage soft things like pasta just with butter to make the surface smooth, and mozzarella cheese. This has been my diet for the past week. I guess potato pieces with melted mild cheese would also go down. ice cream gives me relief and the only pleasure I can get from food at the moment.
I too was told that yoghurt should be avoided during chemo as it’s one of the dangerous foods when one is immuno suppressed.

I didn’t have painful oral thrush, it was more that everything I ate, and I mean everything, fruit, veg, potato, paste, rice, bread, sweets, tasted absolutely VILE. It was horrible and I had this for 10 days, I only ate when my stomach was killing me as so hungry. It was making me really miserable. Oh and I had a burning throat and lungs, Omeprazole prescribed.

Well overnight it’s vastly improved since using Gel-Clair since yesterday morning, must have got rid of all of the layers I couldn’t get too and suddenly I can taste everything again and its WONDERFUL and no vileness at all.

Celebrated by stuffing my face at Frankie and Bennys, having bbq baby back ribs, jacket potato, coleslaw and corn on the cob and a coke

I’ve been on Flucoznole for 6 days too. Thank GOOOOOOOOOOOD it’s gone, seriously.

I’ve put on another thread that I’ve just been told that Tincture of Calendula cuts out the vile taste - ordered some and I@ll let you know! Gel-clair might be another option though! Sounds good! I found that drinking milk helped the raw mouth I had last Tax - not sure whether it was thrush cause I was taking Fluconazale and it shouldn’t have been! but hey! Who knows? Painful. Horrid… Didn’t take a week for Nystan to work when I first had thrush, 2-3 days… I’m now immune to it though!

I have been prescribed tablets called Itraconazole, has anyone been given it? I had chemo 8 years ago and after tamoxifen now on Femara and had problems with mouth for about a year, put it down to Femara but after a break from it my mouth had not really improved.

I have thrush inside mouth with burning tongue and lips, drinking 2-3 litres a day of water),saliva is sticky. Have been seeing my GP all along but no improvement.Have lost weight but that could be trying to eliminate foods that could be causing problem.
Have tried Flucoznole twice, worked okayish first time, 2nd time no good. Tomorrow I am off to hospital for blood tests to see if it is diabetes(my mother was diagnosed with type 2 same age as me now so could be)

If anyone has any ideas I would be soooo grateful.
