Hi, I am one year in to my treatment post lumpectomy for invasive ducal carcinoma and have noticed some changes in my menstrual cycle. I have had some tests with gynae consultant. They have found 2cysts on my ovaries they would like to remove and have indicated it would be easier to take the ovary. I think my head had been spinning since then and have been looking at all my options from having both ovaries removed to a full hysterectomy. I wonder if anyone on here has had a similar experience and if so what they decided to do? I am 42 years old so they are not keen on taking all my bits due to risks of osteoporosis. Would be really grateful for any advice to help.
Hi Loopylu
I had a large cyst on one ovary and went into hospital at the age of 32 to have this removed. This was before consent forms or anything like that, so there was no discussion. The surgeon, without my knowledge, decided to take out the ovary as well. It caused an early menopause, a risk that was never mentioned. I didn’t realise initially as I continued to have periods but they dwindled. I then found that I was infertile and couldn’t have the children I wanted. It was a traumatic experience for me. I suggest that you speak to your team about the risks of this. As you are rather older, you may have had all the family you want but it’s worth understanding whether you will get an early menopause as a result.
Very best wishes
