Overcoming post chemo constipation

Morning all, I’m looking for a bit of advice…. I know that many on here have issues with :poop: mine is constipation :unamused:
My last chemo was 3rd July but I managed things well during actual treatment, just some temporary constipation lasting no more than 3-4 days. Since finishing my bowel movements aren’t going back to normal. If I use an overnight laxative every other day that clears me out but I don’t really want to carry on doing this. I’m doing all sorts of other, natural stuff like upping fluids, eating fruit and being mobile too.
Firstly, any advice about ongoing use of Dulcolax and secondly, any advice to get me out of this cycle? Thank you!

For me I took kazoo for 2 days after my chemo which helped to settle my bowels. Found drinking a cup of coffee in the morning helped, also immune yoghurt drinks, drinking enough water, and albran cereal and also walking.

I have suffered with constipation most of my life. I haven’t had chemo but since diagnosis just over a year ago I have upped my fibre intake to over 30g a day. That has helped but I still had to take something once a week or so. Recently I have added live kimchi to my diet. It has really helped me. Might be worth trying if you can get it.

I feel your discomfort :disappointed: I think everyone is different and we all have to find what works for us individually. I used senna tablets in the evening when I hadn’t been and after a while things found a new normal. 18 months on, I still have the odd time when I feel horrible, but I try not to stress, knowing it will sort itself out. I wish you all the best, try not to worry xx

Hello @altoan

Some of my friends and family swear by extra virgin olive oil, every morning, either as it is or mixed with warm water and lemon. The latter helps with the skin too. Double win.

Hope you get sorted xx

Hi.
I don’t have the advice to stop the constipation itself, but maybe switch to senna, rather than the dulcolax.
When I had constipation because of my chemo, the pharmacy told me senna was more of a gentler way and on your stomach after or during chemo.

Thanks for that info @Concerned75 I had to buy Dulcolax as that was all that was available in store last week and I was keen to get sorted  During chemo I used senacot for the first time and did wonder if one was “better” than the other.
