Pain in ribs after breast clinic investigations

Hi there,

I was referred to the breast clinic 6 days ago and had 2 mammograms, an ultrasound, needle aspiration and 3 biopsies. Since then I have had pain mainly on the side of the investigations behind my ribs and moving over to the centre. It is not at the biopsy site, but further down and it feels like my bones or behind my bones on the left side. It wasn’t too bad the first day or two after the appointment, but has been getting worse as the days go on. Do you know what this may be?

Thank you in advance.

Hi,
I’m sorry I don’t know what the pain is from, but do you have a breast care nurse you can contact? They are usually very helpful and as they will have seen many women they might have more of an idea.
I hope the pain eases for you soon.
Take care.

Dear Moon

Welcome to the forum, we are all here for you. I agree with Lisa give your breast cancer team a call, they will have your note’s too hand and will be able to advise you.

Wishing you well, fingers crossed for a good outcome. Keep posting to let us know how you’re getting on.

Hi Lisa and Tili,
thank you for getting back to me. I was meant to have a phone call yesterday with results, but it never came, so hopefully someone will call today and I can ask them. I do also have a leaflet with numbers of nurses on it, so I’ll call one of them about the rib pain if I don’t get a call.

Thanks again and OK, I’ll come back the outcome also. The lady who did the biopsies wasn’t really sure what it was. I had a cyst that I found as a lump and that’s what made me go to GP, that was aspirated at the breast clinic and disappeared, but something else showed up on mammogram and ultrasound that I hadn’t felt, she thought it was a cluster of cysts with solid bits, but she couldn’t get any fluid out and so took the biopsies. So, it’ll probably be fine.

@moon1 hi, I had pain in my ribs after my ultrasound and biopsies. I am quite small boobs so assumed it was the bruising. It did settle eventually so hopefully yours will too. Hope you get some results today that are reassuring to you xx

Hi, thank you for sharing this with me. I also have small boobs, just under B cup and carry most of my fat on my lower body, so I did consider it might be bruising. The ‘closer look’ mammogram was really quite painful, so it would make sense if it was that. Thank you for your well wishes

Hi moon1

Thank you for your post.

As @galdiolus says some people may experience bruising on the side where they’ve had scans and biopsies taken. This can be particularly so if you’ve had multiple biopsies and like you, are smaller breasted and don’t have much fat covering the chest area. Many people mention they are uncomfortable both during and following the ‘closer look’ mammograms too. Some discomfort is normal and will usually resolve within a week or two.

If you haven’t already done so, you can try simple pain relief to see if this helps relieve the discomfort.

However, if the pain persists or worsens it’s important to report it. As the other helpful forum users have said, you can discuss this with a breast care nurse. If you don’t receive a call today to discuss your results you may want to give them a call to discuss your symptoms and when you may get your results.
