pain in shoulder

Hi all,

I’m just wondering if anybody has had bad pain in shoulder. I thought I had pulled a muscle but it keeps coming back. Most day the painkillers don’t help. Now I wonder if it has anything to do with mets in my liver. I’m on a chemo break now until January, then they’ll test if my blood and liver function are good and hopefully start me on taxol/gemcatibine. Is anybody else on this combo now?
I realised today that there is only a very small chance that I will ever meet any of you, with me living in Belgium, so decided I could give you the link to my website. So if anybody wants to get to “know” me and the kids, just let me know.

Hi maroke

I experienced a loud ‘crack’ and severe pain in my shoulder a couple of times earlier this year which I also thought was pulling a muscle. This was some months before being diagnosed with bone mets, and this shoulder was one of the areas affected, so perhaps for me it was linked to the bone mets. Could this be what you’re experiencing rather than it being linked to the liver? Just a thought.

Best.

Alison

Hi Maroke,

It is possibly related to your liver mets. Depending upon whereabouts in your liver the mets are, they can press on nerves and cause referred pain in your shoulder. This is not uncommon with liver mets and I have had shoulder pains in the past - dull but persistent - which I presumed were related. If you are in pain, I would get in touch with your GP or hospital so that they can do something to get it under control. None of us should be in pain.

Will have a look at your website.

Hi Maroke
Sorry to hear about your shoulder pain. I agree with jenny that you can get pain in your shoulder if your liver is playing up. I know it is so close to christmas now but I think it would be best to get in contact with your oncologist or doctor to see what they think. You shouldn’t be in pain and it needs checking - january seems quite a long way off if you’re in pain.
I would like the link to your website.
take care

Hi - if its your right shoulder its probably your liver - you may need stronger painkillers - I have had this on and off for ages - i just had a very bad episode that passed but doctors gave me stronger pain killers to be sure that i was OK if it happened again…you need to check in with your doctor on this…could you PM the lik to your website ?

Hi Jayne,

I had several pulled muscles since I was on Navelbine. Never had any pain in shoulder. But as I am on chemo break I just panicked and worried this might be because my liver was worse. My GP got me stronger painkillers, but he thought it was “just” another pulled muscle too.

Wishing you a merry Christmas and a happy 2009

Hi Alison,

I had a bone scan a few weeks back and the onc was really pleased with it. It showed no new progression, only 2 small mets in a rib on each side. So I don’t think it’s a new met unless it has come and grown very rapidly.

Hi Maroke
I was DX with a liver met nearly 4 years ago and it was by pure fluke, I never had any symptoms, and LFT where all normal, about a year ago I was experiencing a muscular shooting pain in the front of my right shoulder, once scanned they confirmed that I had referred pain from my mets pushing on my diaphragm, for me this now always an indication that my liver is playing up… I too also kept getting really bad cramps when I was on navebeline, which would also leave me with a pulled muscle feeling. I would say pop along to the hospital and get a blood test to check ur LFT - put your mind at rest, get the dr’s to get the pain under controle, I found a combination of voltarole and diazipam got rid of it - you would need an anti inflammatory such as asprin rather than paracetamole to help the pain in the mean time. The pain I get from my rib mets are more of a throb than a muscular shooting pain…
