Pain in tailbone - feeling scared now

Hi, it is a long time since I’ve been on this website but I have started to freak out about a pain that I have suddenly (2 days ago) developed in my tailbone. To give you a bit of history, I was diagnosed with bc in Jan 2007 ER positive. I had mastectomy, radiotherapy, ovaries blasted and am on Arimidex. I had a scare in May last year when a mass was found in my ‘good’ breast. after weeks of biopsies it was found to be benign. It was very stressful and at the time I also separated from my husband so I had a hard couple of months.

this past week I felt like I was getting a urine infection but this feeling has gone now. Anyway to celebrate the start of a new year I went out with some friends on new years eve. I had a good time but the next morning I felt pain in my tailbone. I don’t know what has caused this as I didn’t fall or bump it. Anyway today I got up and the pain is a lot worse. I can’t sit on it and even when I stand I get pain. It is very sharp pain and makes me cry out. I googled this and came across a cancer link and now I am really scared! does this sound like it has come back in my bones?

sorry for rambling and thanks for any replies xx

Hi FC
Sorry to hear you are worried about this new pain you have. It’s always a worry when you’ve had BC and then you google a link to something that’s bothering you! It could be a nerve pain caused by something quite innocent or, again, something not related to BC at all. I know it’s a worry so it may be best to see your GP. As a rule of thumb, us secondary ladies tend to be told if something like this is around for longer than 2 weeks it’s best to get it checked out. As you are in some discomfort it’s probably worth seeing your GP before then. Hopefully it will turn out to be something that can be treated quickly.

I’m with Nicky, and in the meantime you might want to think what you would have done pre-BC, and do the same. So if you would have taken a course of ibuprofen while waiting for your GP appointment, do that now.

I had a scare a few weeks ago with a backache and sore hip - both of which I still have - and scared myself silly. Even had a bone scan and it came back perfectly clear. The thing is, aching bones aren’t always a cancer sign, the drugs we are taking are known to make bones ache. And if you were out dancing and having fun you might have turned funny and just “cricked” something without noticing, resulting in the sore tailbone.

I won’t say “don’t worry”, but I hope the worry isn’t too distracting while you wait for your doc’s appointment.

Thank you both for our replies. I have been to the GP today who has prescribed antibiotics. She thinks it is very unlikely to be anything serious but has asked me to get in touch of the pain is still there on Friday. I’m feeling a lot happier now, thank you ladies xx

Hi Fingerscrossed,

It’s funny how when we take action we do start to feel a bit better about things. I don’t really understand why your GP has prescribed antibiotics but it is good that she has encouraged you to get in touch again if the pain is still there on Friday. I really hope it is nothing - but sadly with a bc history we have to be careful to be sure we aren’t ignoring something that might be important to get checked out. Wishing you the best of luck and hope that pain will go away.

Hello!

I just stumbled across an old post where ladies were discussing pain in the tailbone. One of them said this:

Like you I have had fairly constant lower back ache and my coccyx is often sore. I don’t have pain during the night. I read a letter in Amoena magazine (Issue 26 Autumn/winter 2008) from a lady who had been told that the Tamoxifen may loosen the tissues which hold the coccyx in place, a bit like in pregnancy. You can read the letter on the Amoena website.
