Pain killers

Hi just a quick question,
When do i need to stop taking ibuprofen 600mg three times a day and cocodamol 30/500 x2 4 times a day before my surgery. I can’t get a response from my breast care nurse. I haven’t had a date yet but today is 62 days deadline, so they’ve breached now, but i don’t want to keep taking them and i am called in for surgery as i said i can do short notice. I need the painkillers for spinal stenosis. I have had my pre op last week. So I’m hoping it be too long now. Any advice when i could stop them will be great. I find it difficult to walk or do everyday activities and to go to work without them. Many thanks

Hi sh18,

Thank you for posting your question.

Often you can take medication for pain relief up until the day of your operation. You mention that you had your pre-op assessment last week, if you have a telephone number for the pre-op team they will be best placed to advise on when any medications would need to be stopped. You may find our booklet ‘Your operation and recovery’ has some helpful information.

It sounds as though you have been waiting to have a date for your operation confirmed and have had difficulty contacting your breast care nurse about this. You may want to try calling the secretary for your breast surgeon to ask for an update. If you are not able to get an answer you can also speak to the hospital PALS team for support.

We offer a range of free supportive services for anyone who has had a diagnosis of breast cancer which you may be interested in. They include face to face and online courses and events. For more details about all of these services, please see the information on the link.

Do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions.
