Pain, lumps and discoloration after lumpectomy

Hi Again Ladies

Just wondering how long this stuff will last. It seems to be more painful now that it was right after the op (3.5 weeks ago) Most of the bruising has gone but i am left with half a boob that is a pinky colour (no heat or swelling) and all around the hole inside is very hard and lumpy, the worst place being under the cut.Its driving me crazy.

Any information on if this is usual and how long it will take to settle would be much apreciated xxx

All your nerve endings will be healing now which is most probably causing the pain.  I know my main scar was rather pink and lumpy for several weeks but then did settle down and now 10 months it just looks like a crease.

If you are concerned or just want re-assurance by getting it checked out contact your bcn or GP so they can have a look at it.

Hi Unjoya

If you’ve had quite a lot of tissue removed, you might have lots of internal stitches which can tighten up and pull, I think they take about six weeks to dissolve. The scar may feel hard and lumpy for quite a long time, but it’s surprising how it smoothes out and flattens over time.

I had my cancer op, therapeutic mastectomy, a year ago, and have just had a breast reduction to the good side because I was left with a big size difference. The breast reduction was two and a half weeks ago, so I’m also at the stage of finding things more painful now than at the beginning, and also finding the scar lumpy and itchy. The shooting pains from nerves rejoining can also go on for months, though everyone’s different

Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for your reply. I guess it was quite a big chunk…2.9cm plus the margins. I can feel the hole where it was. The incision is round the nipple not over where the lump was so in guess they did some extensive excavation in there!

I think the important thing isn’t so much the actual size, more how it compares to what you started with. I had 5cm removed the first time, and needed a second op to clear the margins, so 7,cm and more than 200g in total. But I was a fairly generous EE cup to start with, and managed to avoid a mastectomy, if I’d been smaller then I would have had to have a mastectomy, it was fairly touch and go.

It’s amazing what they can do, and how much better the outcome can be, compared to how it seems when you first get diagnosed, and first see the post op scars etc. I was a complete emotional wreck, but a year on things seem so different. So it will get better than this, it helps to talk to other people going through it so you know you’re not alone.
