Pain/soreness in reconstructed breast

Hi,

Two years ago I had a masectomy and breast implant in my left breast. For the last couple of weeks, I have had aching in my breast and arm pit and soreness and tenderness especially around the nipple area. I was wondering whether you could please give me any advice or suggestions into what might be causing it and how I could ease it. Thank you x

Hi @kaspar1,

Thanks for getting in touch about the tenderness you have noticed after your implant reconstruction 2 years ago.

Immediately after surgery for breast cancer and in the months that follow, it’s common to feel some pain and discomfort .You may experience different sensations such as a burning feeling and numbness in the scar area and under the arm. As healing takes place, these effects usually subside (get less or ease). For most people this happens within a few months. However, for some, they can continue and we know this can affect quality of life. Having pain may make it more difficult to do arm exercises and maintain a good range of movement.

As the aching and soreness you have mentioned in your breast and armpit are new changes, it’s important to report any problems you’re having to your breast care nurse, treatment team or GP.

Ongoing (chronic) or persistent pain may be caused by damage to the nerves, particularly those in the axilla (underarm). Our information about managing ongoing pain may be helpful.

Some people benefit from specialist advice so your doctor may refer you to an NHS pain clinic. And some hospitals run pain management programmes.
