Pain when administering filgrastatin injection

Hi. My husband has been giving me my injections on my thigh but it’s so painful when the drug is being administered. I take it out the fridge 3 hours before. Not sure why it stings so much. It’s more painful that having my bloods done or when I’ve had other injections. Any ideas on what we are doing wrong? We follow the instructions and pinch the skin, give it at 45 degree angle as advised.

Hi @rosa1 try injecting into your tummy area. Not to close to your belly button though! More on the side of your stomach. Pinch the skin like you are already doing and try that.

I’m diabetic so used to injecting daily, I’m also doing the same injections as you and I always find the stomach is the best place.

Hope that helps!

@hc1973 I’m avoiding my stomach as I’m pregnant. Thanks for the advice anyway. I’ll just keep going with the pain. It’s just 2 more days to go thank god x

Hi @rosa1 can you ice the injection site first so it’s numb? X

Ive never tried that. Will it help?

I found it helpful when I was injecting clexanne, I couldn’t use stomach because the diep made it too tight, so did thighs but it hurt so much. I read icing it helped…so I tried that for about 10 minutes before, and it helped loads. Check with your BC nurse maybe? x

@wrenny ill give that a go this evening. Compared to other injections I’ve had this is the worse.

I keep reading that it"s really painful :confounded: Hope it helps x

My biggest tip is go slowly. Really really slowly! I take it out about 30 minutes before, not sure if it’s allowed out for 3 hours. But mine doesn’t hurt at all. Good luck!!

It can be left out the fridge for a while. I’ll ask my husband to try and give it slowly this time. How slowly do you give it?

I probably do it over about a minute…
Just nice and slowly
Doesnt sting at all
Hope it goes well xx

Hey @rosa1 you can ask your team for a numbing gel but be warned, it doesn’t numb quite deep enough! You can also ask for Pegfilgrastim if you’re really struggling. It’s a one off injection instead of daily injections. Its efficacy is the same but it’s slow release. I’ve had that as that’s what my hospital gives. Makes it easier to only have to do it once! Oh and the numbing cream was given for my port but I use it for the injections as my port failed and had to be taken out. But it’s worth asking! X

Definitely too long out of the fridge, should be no more than 30 mins.
Don’t pinch the skin and insert the needle quickly at 90’ not 45’. Inject it quickly.
Good luck x

The instructions I was given by the hospital was to pinch the skin and 45 degrees if the pinch of skin is only 1inch.

The needle is designed the correct length so that theres no need to pinch and to insert at 90’. You’ve been given duff information - sorry

I take it out of the fridge 30- 60 mins before & pinch inner thigh, helps that I got plenty to pinch. I got told to pinch by Christie’s staff.
Could you perhaps take paracetamol beforehand 30 mins to help with the pain? I know being pregnant will make things so difficult :hugs:
I take about 3,4 secs before I hear the click & it helps.
