Painful swelling in thigh

I have lung and spine mets. Recently I have increased pain in lower back, hip, and all down right leg (including toes).

I thought perhaps it is a sciatica type thing. However this morning, much to my horror, have noticed a painful swelling which seems to be in the soft tissue (fat) at the side of thigh.

I am just wondering if anyone has had anything similar?
Worried sick, in pain and totally fed up. Julie

Hi Julie

I haven’t been diagnosed with secondaries but have a very similar problem to yours. I have a really bad pain in the lower back just in the middle of my bum. It was so painful and I went to an osteopath who thinks it is a strained muscles which has put pressure on the sciatic nerve. I too have a really painful swelling now on the outside of my thigh about half way down. It is a sharp pain, almost like a sting and quite swollen. I am hoping that it connected with the inflammation of the sciatic nerve - I hope yours is too. Sounds very similar

66 & 59,

Please see a doctor, especially if you are on Tamoxifen, swelling with pain is the sign of a DVT.

Good luck Kat x

Thanks for your advice ladies. Seeing onc on Wed, so will mention.
Not on tamoxifen but will monitor.

I am hoping it is connected with sciatic nerve. Julie

Hi Julie
Oh I don’t like to hear that you have this problem. I’m so neurotic about things like this, I’d probably hassle the docs at some point before Wed. It does sound like a sciatic nerve though.
If you get any funny feelings in your leg, make sure you get advice asap.
Lots of love,
Anne with big tum!

Thanks Anne,

Out of my mind really. At hospice again tomorrow so will ask then. Fully prepared for a hospital visit, in case DVT.
Dont want to die suddenly of pulmonary embolism, but cant quite summon energy to do anything at mo, as very tired and too much going on!!

Sorry you still have big tum. Sorted on Tuesday.

Speak soon. Julie

Hi,
just caught sight of your problem. I was diagnosed with trochanteric bursitis last week, which is inflammation of the bursa (fluid filled sac) which is towards the top of the thigh bone. It is the really big muscle that joins the thigh and hip and stops everything grating as tendons and bones move across each other. That was really painful to touch the side of my thigh/upper leg (about bottom of knicker level) and shooting pains if I moved my leg, toe, etc. I have to have NSAIDs for it and it is very common apparently. It can appear from other hip trouble or be set off by your back. You can also get it if one leg is shorter or you sit in bucket seats in your car. Just thought you might like to hear about another possible reason, apart from the cr@p C.
Fingers crossed for you
hop along Lily x

Thanks lily,
Appreciate your comment.
