Parabens- skin care

Just read article re skincare ranges without parabens or sodium lauryl sulphate.
Are available in the organics section of the Victoria Health website.

Great Normski

I started a thread a while ago on finding paraben free productions, natural products etc. One great skincare thing I’ve discovered is neat glycerin, mixed with water, it’s a great moisturiser, and found a great deodorant in Holland and Barrett, called Desert Essence.

My investigations continue…

Just the name alone makes me want to go and buy it- and will. Keep up the investigations Sherlock!!

Hi Cecelia,

how much water do you mix with the glycerin. i’m gonna try it out!

thanks for the tip.

I see that Crabtree & Evelyn do Glycerin and Rosewater Toner and I think there are more products in that range also. Lots of chemists stock this brand I think.

Thanks Norma. I’m gonna check that out.

Neal’s Yard stuff is good… no nasty ingredients… but a bit pricey. But heck, we need to spoil ourselves when going through all this c**p!!
Off to have a lovely soak in a Neal’s Yard Lavender bath…mmmmmm

Have found some Australian organic shampoo and conditioner in Holland and Barret, reasonably priced and no parabens in sight !

Lloyds pharmacy have just started doing a range that’s paraben free called Skin Food-it’s from New Zealand.

…and paraben free hairdye Naturtint also from Holland and Barrett.

I swear by the Liz Earle range - have done for about 10 yrs (have bad eczema & this range is the only one I use without irritation) and was able to use all through treatment having first run ingredient list via oncologist. Her skin repair was brill after surgery & rads (E45 was a no go for me - irritated my skin) on scar & rad area from collarbone to bottom of ribs on whole left side. Orange Flower Body Wash is just wonderful and NO sls.

I can’t post the website, but if you google Green People all their stuff is free of everything.

On the face of it, they don’t look cheap, but it all lasts for ages and almost 4 years after I found it I’m still using it - lovely stuff.

I think the best paraben and sulfate free stuff is the AKIN and ALCHEMY range of cosmetics. You can buy them in australia - not sure if you can get them overseas - maybe via the internet. They smell divine and are really nice to use.

I thought crabtree and evelyn stuff had parabens in them. i know body shop stuff does.

Dear all,
All products that I use are organic as I am so paranoid! However I just recieved an eye conceler from Lancome and I have read that it has parabens in it. Will it really harm me? I really like it but shall I give it away?

Any ideas woud be much appreciated!

Lipstick…its up to you. There is no conclusive evidence whatesoever that parabens are implicated in causing cancer,so it really depends on your own beliefs.

Parabens have been found in breast tumours however Dr Philippa Dardre, who carried out the research, acknowledges that the sample (100 breast tumours) was small and further research is needed. Parabens are classed as oestrogen mimics and can accumulate in the body. Whilst they have been found in tumours, there is no evidence (as yet because I don’t think anyone has carried it out) to show whether or not they cause breast cancer. There are all kinds of theories about the toiletries and cosmetics industry opposing and possibly preventing such research, however, who knows? We need to be aware that there are numerous people and organisations who also make money out of our fear of cancer and it’s return, and are only too willing to sell (usually at an inflated price) a product that claims to reduce or remove the risk of cancer or it’s recurrence. I must admit that I avoid certain things, choosing to err on the side of caution as well as give my treatment a “helping hand”. As I’m taking tamoxifen, I don’t feel it helps if I then expose myself to large doses of synthetic or phyto oestrogens- I don’t know if this does help but then it probably can’t do any harm either. I avoid parabens, soya, (for example) and I use Naturtint hair colours, mainly because they don’t take your breath away with the smell of bleach. At the same time, I still like my “slap” and lippy so I don’t panic if the odd item has parabens in it.

The research you refer to did not compare breast tissue samples which don’t have breast cancer. The fact of traces of parabens in breast tissue with cancer does not mean the parabens were implicated in the breast cancer. A bit of non science.

…which effectively, is what I’ve said above, in summarising the available information on that piece of research.

Another range which claims to be free from parabens and mineral oils is the BNatural range from Tesco. I’ve tried quite a few of their products and I find them quite effective, particularly taking into account their price - they cost only a fraction of some of the other makes that have been listed in this thread so far, so great if you’re on a budget.

Although I’m sure this will raise other issues, like the fact that Tesco is slowly but surely taking over the world!!!

Stay well,

Hi all,

Sorry - just found this thread late, but for anyone still interested I have been trying to use paraben- and SLS-free products for a few years now (before getting bc), as well as aluminium-free deodorants.

For info, I have like using the Naked Body Care range (shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, etc - you can get it in Boots, and the Elave range (from Ireland, I think. Have only found this in one health/beauty shop in Inverness, or you can order online (edited by moderator)

There was another company based in Bristol whose name I forget…

I don’t know if these are doing me any good but I feel happier using them.

(I live in a soft water area, which means the products lather well, but it may be different in hard water areas…?)
