Part time/sick pay

Hello everyone,

I started a new job earlier this year, a very small company (only 3 of us) and I work part time. I was diagnosed with cancer in August and started chemo in October. I know my contract doesn’t include any company sick pay, but I have been trying to work around the chemo (it’s every 3 weeks, I don’t work the first week and carry on the other two). I’m wondering whether I’m entitled to any SSP for the week I don’t work? Or because I come back to work in between am I sacrificing that? I know it isn’t much, but every bit helps when you’re sick! X

Hi, Macmillan is an excellent place to get advice on financial support. Best wishes with the rest of your treatment x

Hi @phebe - check with MacMillan but it is my understanding you can get signed off as “unfit to work unless well enough” - or words to that effect and work in your well periods and claim SSP when you are not working. This was what I had planned to do then my oncologist told me I absolutely wouldn’t be able to work during treatment - so I told boss I wouldn’t and she has put cover in place (very small company like yours) & turns out I absolutely would have been able to work some weeks like you x

It depends what your work pattern is so do you work over 5 days or work something like 3 full days a week?

It’s flexible, so I work any hours over the week which probably doesn’t help! Contracted 16 but I work 24 usually…
