Patient attitudes towards avoidance of surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (Royal Marsden)

What is the title of the project?

Would you avoid surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy? (Royal Marsden)

What is the project about?

We would like your input in designing a study to help us understand patients’ preferences in deciding whether to participate in research which would offer them a less invasive procedure instead of surgery after their chemotherapy treatment.

Some patients diagnosed with breast cancer will receive chemotherapy in order to shrink the tumour before surgery. In some of these patients, the chemotherapy treatment will completely remove the cancer in the breast.

Currently, many breast centres around the world are investigating whether surgery could be safely avoided for these patients by replacing it with a less invasive procedure called Vacuum Assisted Biopsy (VAB).

We believe patients’ perspectives and input is very important when it comes to evaluating new treatment strategies. To be able to design this study, we need to know which factors are important for patients to be able to make decisions with regards to their surgery.

We would like to invite you to fill out an online questionnaire and your feedback will help us in our further research in this topic.

Mr. Peter Barry, consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon, peter.barry@rmh.nhs.uk
