Pegfilgrastim

Hi all

I had my first injection today, I’m only having one instead of over five days. The side effects make for grim reading don’t they? Has anyone got any experiences they can share?

I’m struggling to know what side effects to keep an eye out for as I have a chronic condition that causes effects similar to some side effects from chemo/meds. I don’t want to keep bothering the nurses with things that aren’t related to treatments :woman_shrugging:

Hi @sharlou,

I had the one-day Pegfilgrastim too. When I had it after EC chemo, I didn’t notice any side effects from the jab, possibly because I had bad nausea from EC so was focused on that! However, when I had the jab after taxol, I would get a temperature and muscle aches for 1-2 days, like the flu.
I hope it goes smoothly for you!

Thank you for your reply, that’s put my mind at rest a bit! Sorry you had nausea issues with EC, it’s day 3 for me but the nausea is being well controlled up to now (touch wood :grimacing:) There’s so many side effects that they tell you to look out for that my head is spinning a bit!

Hope your recovery is going well :hugs:

Hi Sharlou, I also had one jab 24 hours after each chemo. I never read up on the side effects and tried to focus on the benefits. The risk of infection terified me so it was definitely the lesser of 2 evils for me. Other than some flushing of the face I didn’t really notice much from the Pegfilgrastim. I did have the flu like symptoms after Docetaxel but I was told that that was common enough after Docetaxel.
I hope you find any side-effects to be manageable.

I’m terrified of needles and start chemo soon. I was going to ask for this one injection rather than the one you have to do every day . Can you administer it yourself or does it have to be done by a nurse ?

I was given a choice and chose to do it myself to save a trip back to hospital. In my experience the nurses are so kind that if you don’t feel like you want to do it they will be more than happy to. It wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I thought though!

@LynneHM thank you! I quite like the flushing face to be honest, makes me look like I’m in ruddy health! xx

Glad you have the nausea under control, that was the worst side effect of chemo for me!

I was dreading it to be honest as I hate feeling sick. I’ve only got one day left of two of the anti sickness meds and then I’ll be left with just the one you take as needed (don’t know all the names of them yet )

Are you through chemo and out the other side now?

Hi @sharlou. I am in August group too. Also had pegfilgrastim after my first EC. I didn’t notice anything except achey legs for a day. It was fine. I’m glad to be getting the single injection rather than the 5 or 7 day ones…not all health trusts offer it as it is expensive. X

Thank you! To be fair I’ve felt ok then ended up in A&E today with horrendous chest and rib pain! I called the oncology helpline and they sent me to A&E. Turns out I have costochondritis…don’t think it’s necessarily related to any of the meds as such - I have ongoing ligament and joint issues anyway so I think all the stress etc has triggered a flare up. Couldn’t fault the hospital though, they checked my bloods, heart and lungs. In they end they gave me a chug of morphine and sent me home with codeine. Long day though, shattered now! X
