Hi @peggy5 welcome to the forum. I was 66/67 during active treatment which was surgery for an IDC with DCIS plus radiotherapy and endocrine treatment for five years. I didn’t have a mastectomy though therefore can’t answer your direct question but would like to suggest that you also post in this category DCIS/LCIS - Breast Cancer Now forum which is specifically for DCIS/LCIS where there will be more people on hand to give you the benefit of their experience. Good luck with the surgery.

So I had a slightly different diagnosis but lots of DCIS.

I found a lump in right breast and DCIS also seen after scans etc, about 1cm they thought, but because there was also a lump they recommended mastectomy.

They also saw some DCIS on left side and offered lumpectomy or mastectomy- I went for double mastectomy.

Pathology showed the 1cm on right was actually 5cm DCIS and the left had 6cm DCIS and two tiny invasives, so they would never have got the margins had they done a lumpectomy.

I had had three mammograms, three ultrasounds and stereotactic mammogram but much of the DCIS did not show up.

Anyway, nearly one year on, no regrets with my double mastectomy no recon, recovery was great.
I really hope your op and recovery also goes well xx

Hi Peggy

This is my first post here.

My journey started in January 2025 when I was referred for urgent review presenting with a nipple leision and some discharge.
Long story short I was prescribed steroid cream on 2 occasions as it was thought the problem was nipple eczema, however mammogram showed DCIS, later found to be high grade, with cancer cells right to surface of nipple.
I had WLE in Feb, then a second in March to clear margins, false hope given when I was told surgery complete to then be told I had to have nipple removed in April, told nearly 0% chance would need further op but more cancer cells found and this time with microinvasion so had my 4th surgery on 15th May - a mastectomy, slnb and immediate implant recon.
This was the right decision as more cancer cells found approx 7cm and I am small breasted. Lymph node was clear though and other than several areas of microinvasion still classed as DCIS.
I have 5 days radiotherapy starting 25th June and be so glad to see the end of this year.
Recovery wise was longer after mastectomy but really once tiredness subsided it’s not been bad. I do have cording in armpit and under breast but didn’t stop me going back to gym 3 weeks post op - I am only 36 though and previously very fit.
Hope this helps, happy to answer anymore questions.

Hi @stillsmiling2025 what rotten luck to have had to go through so much, each time having to come to terms with more surgery when you thought the worst was over. I wanted to welcome you to the forum, you’ll find lots of support of all kinds here. I also wanted to alert you to the subcategory we have for younger women which you can find here Younger women - Breast Cancer Now forum - if you weren’t already aware of it. I do hope that the rest of the year sees your recovery, both physical and emotional, go onwards and upwards.
