Hi! I am hoping for some good stories with the mirena removal! I am HR positive so I am getting my IUD removed. It’s been 15 years with no period- I’m on my 3rd IUD. I’m nervous that my periods will be miserable… I’m also going to be taking tamoxifen. Any input would be helpful!
Hi
I don’t have any experience yet, but I have also just had my coil removed after having one for almost 8 years. It really helped with my endometriosis too, so really not looking forward to my next period.
Hi I’m so sorry you have this extra stress.
My oncologist was happy for my ( 3rd) mirena coil to stay in for it’s remaining year as she felt despite my cancer being ER positive, my recurrence risk was very low.
I too suffered from endometriosis before having IVF babies and found the coil really effective at stopping it coming back.
You don’t say how old you are .I’m 51, so not sure I’d actually get a period next year when it runs out or if I’m through menopause.
Perhaps it’s worth asking how high your particular cancer recurrence risk is, to help you decide if it’s necessary.
I gave had to stop HRT obviously…which is a bummer but better to be here and a mad menopausal woman…than the alternative!
I wish you lots of luck in your path xx
Thank you! They just requested the oncotype test so I’m not sure on the recurrence . I saw my oncologist yesterday and he wasn’t happy it was still there. I am 43.
Oh yeah, I bet that was not fun. My bf just asked me if I’m going to be even more emotional when I get this removed so yeah, my emotions are all over the place. I think I’m definitely in perimenopause.
I did read that certain anti depressants can help with menopause symptoms so that could be an option for us?
I think they’re much more cautious when your younger, best to reduce all risk factors I guess.
I was told I could have the copper coil instead, but the side effects of that can be a bit crappy. Choices choices eh!
Oh that makes sense. Yeah, I said no to the cooper one too. We have enough side effects to deal with!
Second that! The cooper coil gave me really heavy periods. It’s so hard isn’t it, our emotions are all over the place because of a breast cancer diagnosis and then all the hormonal stuff on top. Difficult to work out what’s causing what.
Worth looking into antidepressants if it’s all getting a bit much, whatever helps get us through!
Good luck with your next step of your journey. I am also waiting for oncotype to come back. I am 45.
You too! We’ve got this!!
Hi @krissymlit I was 43 when diagnosed with very advanced and invasive lobular BC back in 2021; ER8/PR8 so I had my Mirena coil removed (after 12 years) but I was also put in medically induced menopause straight away so no nasty surprises, aka heavy periods. I am on 3 monthly Prostap injections and Letrozole for another 4.5 years so not sure why you are going on Tamoxifen and having your coil removed (ask your onco team); for me it doesn’t make sense.
I was not even peri-menopausal when I was diagnosed. I went from not having any periods to the menopause…and been struggling since then with the awful side effects of the menopause…I absolutely hate it…
All the best with your treatment and take care. Xxx
I had my mirena out and it was better when it was taken out than it was having it put in. I have a very backward facing womb which I only found out about after getting fibroids.
Good luck and let me know how you got on good or bad. The worst experience I had was with a hysteroscopy. Under no circumstances have this without going under as it was horrible and I bled for a week afterwards and as I was about 64 at the time I had nothing to use to stop it reaching my underwear. the docs said nothing about this side effect so don’t assume anyone will tell you either.
