Periods, tamoxifen, almost 50

Hi there,

I am turning 50 in a few weeks and have been on tamoxifen since May 2025. My periods are getting further and further apart (30 days, 45 days etc). Should I be going to see the GP as I know they aren’t generally fond of doing bloods for perimenopausal women. Or do I just assume it’s a ‘good’ side effect of tamoxifen and inching towards menopause?!

Thank you.

Hi phoenix5

Thank you for your post asking about whether it is normal for periods to become less frequent when you are on tamoxifen.

It is not unusual for your periods change when you are taking tamoxifen, they may become lighter, irregular or they may stop altogether. This may also be because the menopause may be occurring naturally during this time, as you say.

You don’t need to see your GP or treatment team unless you start to have heavy periods or unusual bleeding. It may help to keep a record of your periods and if you find your periods stop, you could contact your treatment team to discuss if a blood test would be helpful to check your menopausal status.
