Phlebitis and cancelled chemo

Just wondering if anyone else has suffered from phlebitis while having chemo and any advice on how to relieve the symptons?
I developed one in my leg last week,it is very painful, I have been prescribed antibiotics, ibuprofen and hirudoid cream. I should have had 5th chemo on Thursday but doctor said it was too risky.
Thanks Sue x

Hi there
Didn’t have on chemo as I only had rads, but I had very strange symptoms, like varicose veins down each boob, which GP said was phlebitis, and it freaked me out a bit. It did disappear after about a week though. Not sure if this will be of any help.

Hi yes i had phlebitis but they used a different vein for chemo and bloods were taken from hand. Veins still sore 10 weeks after chemo finished, I just keep the arm warm and mobile. Good luck

Thanks both for replying and your advice, it seems abit better today, seems to help by keeping it warm.

Oh dear. I can’t offer advice except for the usual painkillers and keeping it warm, but I can offer sympathy. I had phlebitis in my arm after my recon when the canula was left in too long, and it is the most painful thing I have ever experienced (and like most of us on this site, I’ve experienced a lot.) It was like my veins were on fire and at one point I think if someone had suggested amputation was a suitable treatment for the pain and I’ve jumped at it.

I can also offer hope, in that once the problem was diagnosed and I started antibiotics it cleared up really quickly.

Thanks crawfo64, I am on antibiotics so hope mine clears up quickly too, I am due to have 5th chemo this week after last one was cancelled last Thursday.
