PICC Line check

I’ve just had my 3rd EC chemo, via a PICC line and reported to the Community Nurse and then the BCN that at times I get a little “feeling” in my chest wall. The Community Nurse was concerned but the BCN not - which I understand. Having spoken to the oncologist I have now been booked for a scan tomorrow. The person who made the appointment with me stated several times that I must fast for 4 hours - only water. I’m ok to do as I’m told, but am now wondering what type of scan (I thought it would be an X ray or ultrasound) they will be doing?

Hi altoan

Thank you for your post.

It’s not uncommon for people who have had a PICC line inserted to feel something in their chest. This sensation can happen when the line is flushed or in use, or sometimes with certain movements. Sometimes the sensation may be caused if the PICC line tip has moved position, so, it’s important for your team to check that the PICC line is in the right place. Your treatment team will use imaging such as an x-ray or scan to do this.

We are unsure what type of scan you will be having and why they have instructed you not to eat for 4 hours before your scan. However, there are some scans that do often require fasting beforehand, such as a CT scan when it is used with a contrast dye. The contrast dye helps to show the area more clearly and often gives a better picture than a standard X-ray. Some ultrasound scans can also give a clearer picture if the abdomen is empty.

Your breast care nurse or treatment team should be able to explain more about the scan that has been arranged for you. .
