Pleural Effusion Secondary Breast Cancer

I have just been diagnosed with pleural effusion caused by secondary breast cancer. I have an IPC and meet my oncologist in a weeks time. I have spoken to the oncology nurse who has started me on Letrozole. She says I will probably start Ribociclib in a couple of weeks time. I don’t know anything about prognosis, google is scary. Side effects of ribiciclib? Can I still go on holiday in June? I’m learning how to drain the IPC myself. Anyone in similar situation or a wee bit further on?

Hi. I have just started my 2nd cycle of Ribociclib with Letrozol. No significant side effects so far and my visible lesions on my breast have reduced. I would definitely do what you can as this combination seems to be very effective.
I like you was very apprehensive about possible side effects. Hope you keep well and enjoy your holiday

Hello, I’m so sorry you find yourself here. It sounds like you’ve had a rough time of it. There’s a secondary breast cancer section of the forum where you might get more support with posts.

I’ve had secondaries since June 2020. Have been on palbociclib since December 2020, which is very similar to ribociclib. I hope that gives you some hope. Nobody knows how long the drugs will work for each person so google really isn’t helpful.

Where are you looking to go to in June? I went on holiday when I started on palbociclib. I just was careful at not doing too much and took a thermometer.

I hope the drugs start working asap and your symptoms dwindle. Sending lots of love.x

We are driving to north of France for a golfing holiday although I haven’t managed to play since being diagnosed. Having the pleural catheter hasn’t been ideal for golf but at least I can breath. I start ribociclib on Tuesday.

I can imagine! Just a change of scenery is nice sometimes though. The only issue might be travel insurance. “Insurance With” is great and has been really reasonable for me, but I think they like you to be on treatment for a little bit first. Defo worth a try though.
