Portacath and car seat belts

Does anyone else have a problem with car seat belts and their portacath?

No matter how I adjust the height of the seat belt, the strap always comes right across my port. Whilst this doesn’t actually hurt I do wonder what might happen in the event of an emergency stop. Has anyone else experienced this, and have you any solutions short of wearing a pillow!

I know what you mean lola, although mine is on the left side I am usually a passenger. I haven’t found a solution other than to hold the belt away from me, but not recommended if you are driving! I guess you just get used to it. I think the risk of not wearing a seatbelt is greater than the risk of damage from pressure on the port.

Hi had my hickman in today and just nipped to shop and belt seems to sit right on exit site legally not sure but endend up lowering belt then hooking it under height adjustment not ideal but still wearing a belt and hopefull its only whilst its new and bit tender

I had the same problem Lola - my mum bought me a sheepskin seatbelt cover thing (I think you can get them on ebay). It makes it much more comfortable - it’s lovely, I still use it now.

You can purchase a plastic part which you fit onto belt and it holds it away from the body slightly, my OH had one when he had a bypass op. Think we may have got it in Halfords, sorry the brain does not work the way it used to! Like the idea of a sheepskin cover, might look into that.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I like the idea of the sheepskin cover. I’m not sure about Lucinda’s plastic part though. The belt doesn’t actually hurt me, I am more concerned about serious damage after an emergency stop when my body slams into the belt right where the port is, and the port is somehow dislodged or broken up inside my body!! After all, seat belts can crack ribs in an accident. Am I being paranoid again?

Hi there, I have great discomfort whether driving or as a passenger - acute sensitivity rather than actual pain. i bought a pair of seat belt wraps in Wilkinsons for a few pounds and they have been great. Not sure if they still stock them, but I think they have a web site and I could do with replacing mine 2 years on. Bye Jean
