Post lumpectomy disfiguration

Hi all.

I had a lumpectomy on 1/7/26 and my breast looked exceptionally good post op, albeit smaller and higher than the other one. I then had an infection, but all remained good until suddenly, within a 7-10 day period around week 7/8, my breast became disfigured and hard. Went for U/S and doc says it’s fibrosis. The upper part of my breast is now exceptionally hard and the skin and incision area all puckered and disfigured. Not a pretty sight at all. And it happened so fast! Despite massaging, the fibrotic area does not seem to be improving. Has anyone else experienced this and did it resolve? Thanks.

Thank you. I’ve been doing massage for a while but doesn’t seem to be helping because it’s rock hard and very dense. I’ll check out the different massage suggestions though. Seems that it’s early days after RT for me, as some of these ladies continue to have late changes. What a blooming roller coaster!!

Hi Ellie2,

I developed lymphedema and fibrosis a year after my lumpectomy (August 2025) and 16 proton radiation treatments. I am finally now getting lymphedema therapy which supposedly can help both the edema and fibrosis. The effected breast had felt hard, still, and very heavy, and due to swelling was larger than the other. I had just one full treatment so far and have been trying to do the exercises as well. It’s a little less painful and heavy already, so maybe it will work. If you can access this type of physical therapy, it may be helpful for you. I wish you the best and hope you’re feeling better.
