Post mastectomy exercises

I had a simple mastectomy with SNB 10 days ago and I’m really struggling with one of the basic exercises. Is this normal? Is it ok to not move on to the advanced exercises yet? I can barely do the basic exercises and the advanced ones feel like too much

I was given an exercise sheet and although mine was only lumpectomy I was trying to do all of them - then I saw that the advanced ones were not supposed to be started until 14 days post - op so just check the Information you have been given and keep practicing the more basic ones . If they were going to be very easy to do there wouldn’t be a need for them . If you still aren’t sure maybe get some clarification from your BCN and I’m sure the Nurses will reply in a day or two. I echo what JoanneN said. It is hard, but persevere, then you will be able to move on to the next stage. It is important and worth it in the end. Best wishes.

If it’s not getting easier after a few days contact your BCN - they may want to check you out In person . Always best to get in touch with them if you aren’t sure . Xx

Hi mumsy

Thank you for posting and asking about exercises after surgery. It is not unusual to have some discomfort and arm stiffness in the first few weeks after surgery.

As @JoanneN and @soos say, your arm movement usually improves as time goes on and the exercises will get easier the more they are practiced. It can be helpful to take some simple pain relief before doing your exercise and to gradually increase how much you do over the next few days and weeks.

If your arm movement does not improve or you are continuing to have trouble moving your arm, then it is always important to contact your breast care nurse for assessment and advice. They can offer support and may refer you for physiotherapy if required.
