Hi, how tight is too tight for a post op bra? I had WLE , auxiliary clearance and therapeutic mammoplasty on tues and stars of wearing an Asda post op bra size L (I’m 38B) it was snug. Didn’t really anticipate the swelling foolishly and that bra started to dig in at the band, plus it rolled up. Changed to a Macom post surgery bra size xl today, started off ok but the compression is annoying and the band is rolling up again. Also got the same asda one again but in xl to try. Honestly these blooming things are so annoying and itchy! I know my poorly boob needs support but how much is too much? Tips or ideas welcome x
Good morning, @twinks77
I wore a Nike high impact zip front sports bra I already had after lumpectomy last year and it was perfect. Because it is designed for running it was snug enough to hold everything in place and doesn’t move around. The little bit of padding also felt protective. I’m a 36C and wear a M. Bit pricey, from memory around £40, but worth every penny.
Another excellent buy was “Invisible” crop tops from Primark which I stepped into. Made out of a very thin, stretchy almost shiny material, not the ribbed ones, £8 each. I wore a L in those and they have no seams at all, wide shoulder straps, super comfortable with no band to dig in, and still wear them under close fitting clothes now.
Not a precise bit of advice, but I was told my bra should be tight enough to feel compression, but not so tight it is uncomfortable and should able to put a couple of fingers in and around the bottom band. Bit like when you check the straps on a baby in a car seat, haha! x
I wore the M+S front fastening one - though not so much now . I have several of the cami style ones which I still wear. The Flexi Fit crop I found very useful and still wear . They are soft and stretchy but still give some support and they have removeable foam pads which I could then pop into another bra to even myself out. I only had a lumpectomy but my affected breast was slightly smaller to begin with and after two procedures even more so . Sometimes I wore a crop top underneath a bra or over the top . I didn’t have any problems with riding up etc. I could go back into normal bras but find the post - op ones are more comfortable. I ordered the bras online and didn’t have to pay VAT on them as they’re classed as a surgical appliance but if you buy in store you may have to sign something.
I always stepped into my bras and crop tops for the first couple of months . I was so given a free bra at a support group by the Anita rep ( see Eloise.com) - she fitted me to it and I still wear that one as well. Hope this helps.xx
Thanks both for the tips. I’ve changed to an xl of the original asda bra I started off in and it’s much better today. Also been to have my dressings removed and the nurse has reassured about everything Looking forward to moving into comfier bras or crop tops in future months although I’d never be able to step into one, I’d never get it over my bum!
Twinks - I’m a size 22-24 my bum and tum are sizeable as is the rest of me. One reason I wear M+S is because I’m very broad shouldered and most bras are not big enough across the back . If I can step into a bra or crop top I’m betting you can . Glad to hear you are more comfortable today - getting those dressings off will have helped I found them itchy after a while. Xx
