hi, very frustrated at the excercises i am allowed to do at the moment and by the fact that they hurt. I had a look at the pages for week 3 and even they dont give much encouragement, I am going to loose all the power and strenght i have built up in my hands shoulders and arms over the years and it is going to take some time to get back after I am allowed to start using them properly again.
then i remember my power ball. Its a hand held gyroscope that you hold in one position and flex your fingers and wrist to turn, as it speeds up it excerts between 1lb and 40 lb of pressure, controlled by you. But its no heavier than a cup of tea so I am allowed to hold it.
I used to use it before each practice to warm up the muscles in my hands, arms and shoulders. I remembered how when i first got it all my muscles burned after each session with it,even those in my shoulder. So i thought this must be a good way of keeping up muscle strenght without putting any strain or vibration on the wound.
I got someone to bring it down from the studio today and had my first session–just a couple of minutes to see what happened and its wonderful. No pain at all to use it. But now muscles are glowing and the whole arm and shoulder are relaxed. And my wound feels better (or is that in my head)
So now I do not need to push myself to do more movement than the hospital recommends but can build up the muscles and blood flow so then when the wound has healed i will be in a better position to start drumming again–hurrah!
I didn’t get any exercises to do after my snb just got on with it and used my arm as much as was comfortable. Cant say muscles were weaker after op I am not a drummer but do muck out 3 horses daily and was back doing that after 3 weeks with no problem at all. Did you have all your nodes removed? Maybe mine was easier as only had 5 removed but never really lost any strength in it. Hope your power ball does the trick anyway and you will be back drumming soon x x
no, just a sential node removed. I have had strict instructions not to start drumming for 3 weeks. Although today the physio said I can start driving after 2. and she has approved the power ball.
theres a strict regime of excercises, but again the physio has said I can start the sheet designed for week 3 next week, so that will move me on a bit quicke
It just shows how each hospital is different never got given any exercises to do after my op and no mention of physio at all!! Have got to go to arm class second week of rads though so assume that is exercises for after rads finish. So chemo rads and arm class all on same day looking forward to that ( NOT) Anyway hope your powerball does the trick for you and you are soon drumming away again!!! Went to my mums yesterday and one of her neighbours was giving his drums a workout!! Was quite good actually my mum wasn’t as impressed but then she is nearly 80 a lot of “noise” was her reaction lol
Hi all
I’d be careful with exercising too soon after SNB or WLE surgery. After my SNB I was trying to up my fitness lifting very light weights and I ended up with what my GP said was phlebitis on each boob, bit thick cords on each side. It did fade after a week or two but it gave me a fright when I felt it.
