Hi I have an appointment at the breast clinic next week after presenting to my doc with sporadic pains in right breast. GP has found a thickening in the right breast but I am experiencing again short spats of pain left side but mainly under armpit. Can this be connected? Sorry for sounding ridiculous but I seem to be getting different symptoms regularly?
Hi maiden22,
Thank you for posting. You are not being ridiculous. It is understandable to be worried about the sporadic pains you are experiencing in both breasts and to have questions about what might be causing them.
It is good to hear that you are breast aware and have already been to the GP to report your symptoms.
Breast pain is very common in women of all ages. It can have several causes, which our information explains. Having painful, sore, or tender breasts can cause anxiety. But on its own, it isn’t usually a sign of breast cancer. It can be helpful to keep a pain chart to see if there is any pattern to your pain. You will find a pain chart in our breast pain booklet. It’s important to find out what the possible cause of any persistent breast pain may be so this can be managed.
Breast changes, such as the thickening your GP has noticed, can happen for many reasons. It may be due injury, due to hormonal changes as part of your monthly cycle (if you are still having periods) or due to benign conditions (not cancer).
Your GP has referred you to the breast clinic for further assessment and it is understandable to have questions about this. It may help to know that most people who are referred to a breast clinic do not have breast cancer, however it is important to attend to find out the cause of your symptoms. You may find our information about what to expect at your appointment helpful.
