Medical pre op today returned with five little bottles 3 hi energy drinks to drink the day before the op and 2 hi carbohydrate drinks to drink an hour before surgery I live in torbay and apparently they do this for everyone undergoing a general anaesthetic any body else come across this?
Blimey, that’s excellent! All I was told was to get plenty of fresh air beforehand! Hope it works for you.
Thanks lola I can understand perhaps if I was elderly or my health was otherwise Compromised but apart from the DCIS I am a very healthy active 53 year old and at £3 for 200ml bottle X 5 seems a little expensive but I am grateful that my local hospital is concerned to make sure my recovery is as quick as possible guess it varies from area to area and I am one of the lucky onesx
Wow, that’s great. I was just given a fact sheet which told me not to eat or drink before hand and only to have 1 cup/glass of clear liquid if I really had to drink something lol - I’m in Scotland, just outside Edinburgh!
Hi Loobyb, we were just sitting here discussing whether or not I should stop taking my daily half glass of beetroot. We have been drinking a small glass everyday for the past couple of years but I was a bit concerned that they may think I have a problem in hospital when they see my wee is pink! I just googled beetroot and surgery and there seems to be a lot of sites which advocate vegetable juices such as carrot juice. One site also suggested taking fish oil supllements (which I already do) as they thin the blood but that they can cause problems during during surgery and afterwards if you’re given warfarin.
I want to prepare properly but it seems like a minefield!

Glad to hear they are looking after you. When I had my first op I was told not to eat or drink anything the day of my op and nothing after midnight. So I stopped eating and drinking around 9pm the day before. On the day of my op I was last on the theatre list and went in around 3.30 pm and by this time I was so dehydrated I have such a terrible headache ( I never have headaches) and the pain was much worse than any of the surgery. I was put on a drip because of this. I had to have another op because they didn’t get a clear margin. I found out that once again I was last of the theatre list and I said I really don’t want to go through that again being so dehydrated and they told me oh you can have sips of water up to 2 hours before your op. Nobody bothered to even tell me the first time round! So well done Torbay for looking after you and trying to avoid any unnessary stress and pain for you…
I’m very impressed by the treatment I have received so far by my hospital all the treatment I’ll require can be done at the one hospital which I have read on this forum is not the case for all so glad that I’ll be able to drink something on the day of my op although I have to be at the clinic for 9.00 am have been told that I am unlikely to get to surgery till late afternoon and possibly won’t be back on the ward till about 6.00 pm due to the wait between the biopsy wire blue dye injection and the actual surgery so am prepared for a long day
