pregnant and radiotherapy.

hi all,my mum was diagnosed with bc a month and a half ago. She had a left mastectomy and all her lymphnodes removed just over a month ago.She has just been to see the consultant to see what the next course of action for her is.She has been told that they are going to forget about doing chemo as the cancer was ‘big’. They want to start with radio 5 days aweek for 4 weeks. Does this sound about normal? She has also been given Tamoxin for the next 5 years. Can you please help with the side effects she may have. Any information would be very helpful. Also i am 34 weeks pregnant, will i be able to go with her to the hospital and appiontments. I want to support her as much as i can and think she will probably need help with lifts etc. Also don’t wont her to be on her own. Like i said any help gladly received.

hi rooties - sorry to hear about your mum. I take it you meant that she isn’t having chemo, just radiotherapy ? That is a normal time for radiotherapy -every day from between 3-6 weeks - it varies depending on hospitals/individuals. If you look on the threads about hormone therapy you will find out how people are experiencing tamoxifen (and useful radiotherapy tips) And yes, you can safely go to hospital to support your mum, if you feel up to it of course- there’s no way you can be affected by radiation as you won’t be in the treatment room with her and a person receiving radiotherapy isn’t radioactive. You sound a great daughter and I wish you both (and the baby) lots of luck xxchipperxx

Hi Rooties,
So sorry to hear about your Mum.I think its unusual to do radiotherapy first but that is one thing you will learn, that everyones treatment is different. I just want to reasure you that you can attend your mums radiotherapy appts as the radiation is only present during the treatment when your mum is in the treatment room. She is lucky having you.Take care of yourself too!

Thankyou for your replies. Im glad to hear i can go with her. Ill have a look at the hormone bit. I think im pretty lucky to have her so anything i can do to help, i will. She seems alittle happier knowing shes only got to do radio and hormone rather than all 3.
