What advice would you have to help me prepare my body for treatment, especially chemo but also surgery and radiotherapy. I prefer the ‘warts & all’ version, if that makes sense. Thank you x
Hi I’m sorry you haven’t had a reply to your post . I think it came as the forum was about to undergo major changes and May have been missed . Have you started chemo now ? If not hopefully others will be along with some advice re preparation for chemo soon. Best wishes Jill x
Not yet… that’ll be mid Oct. I have the surgery first on Sept 11th
Hi
I’m not sure there is anything in particular you need to do to prepare for surgery.
Post surgery you may be quite sore, so I would recommend taking the painkillers regularly until things settle. You will probably be given a list of exercises to try, so gradually build those up and that can really help the healing process.
There will be some time between surgery and rads, so just rest up as much as possible. Radiotherapy can cause fatigue during and after treatment, so take things easy and drink lots of fluids. Your team will go through all this with you.
Hope this helps

Hi Sue I was thinking of advice re chemo in particular ?
Oh sorry….
Chemo prep. The worse days are probably 2-7, so it’s preparing for that. Personally I didn’t feel unwell, just very fatigued. So it was useful to prepare meals in advance, childcare, etc. so I could just rest. Just listen to your body, so when you need to rest then do so.

Button front pyjamas with short sleeves, dressing gown, slides, lip balm, had cream, anosol, smelling salts for hospital for op. Dressing gown so you keep your modisty in hospital (gaping gowns and all tgat) lip balm and hand cream your skin can dry out in hospital. Anosol because more than likely you’ll be backed up post op, happened to a lot of us post op. Button front pyjamas so you’re not lifting arm/arms too high to begin with. I had a zip front bra from M&S with racer back for post op, go up 2 sizes on back width to allow fir swelling pre chemo, get your teeth checked at dentist, get a thermometer to keep checking temp. Get your wig voucher and Ali check pre loved wigs at your local Macmillan and also if you fancy it book your look good feel better courses there too and paint nails black to preserve nails on rads drink plenty of water in fact doing this through treatments helped me and slap cream on lots after rads but not before hope this helps, Jill, Sue and I are bcn forum community champions it’s just not showing against us at the minute. I was given some good advice from a good friend who had undergone prostate cancer treatment - it was to get myself as fit as possible before treatment begins. I used to walk miles in the evening after work and I was extra careful about my diet, making sure it was as nutritious as possible. Mentally, I found it all very difficult, especially as I had to make the decision whether or not to have chemotherapy after my surgery (I did). Very best wishes - it feels such a lonely time but reach out to family and friends as much as possible.
