Preventative double mastectomy?

Hi all, yet another new person looking for advice!

I’m 28 years old, and have tested positive for the BARC2 gene. My mother, maternal aunt, maternal grandmother and maternal great aunt have all had cancer - all breast with the exception of my nan who had ovarian cancer. My mum and my aunt were both diagnosed before 50, sadly we lost my mum aged 32 due to breast cancer in 1989.

My dilemma is this: I’m swiftly approaching the age mum was when she was diagnosed, I have a positive BARC2 test and 100% rate of cancer on my mother’s side of the family, therefore I am seriously considering (as in 90% sure) having a double mastectomy, if anyone could talk me through it, (what to expect, what will happen, how you felt afterwards, scarring etc) I would be very grateful.

Thank you

Hi DCS

Your genetics team should be able to refer you for counselling and for discussion with a plastic surgeon who can discuss all option regarding the type of surgery they can offer and whats involved in each surgery… Also you should be able to see examples of his work to see what the outcome looks like.

Also a genetic counsellor or breast care nurse can maybe put you in touch with other women who have been through similar locally.

You can also contact wendy watson at the national hereditary breast cancer helpline who has had this type of surgery and has a team of helpers who have also been through it and check out the the brca umbrella website who actually have private sections showing womens surgical diaries which can give you a good idea of what to expect.

Im a brca 2 carrier and got breast cancer at 37, then a new breats cancer at 40, this came back at 43 and now its incurable at 45… My daughter is 23 and my son is 19 and neither have been tested yet but im keen for them to get tested so i can help them through it while im still around to give them that support… I would hate for them to go through what iv been through.

Sending much love to you and your family and hoping you can get the support you need.

I’ve also got family history and PASH and have been offered a double mascetomy. Like you, I have no idea what to choose for the best and physical impact that surgery would have on my life. It’s such a big decision, isn’t it. x
