Previous heart problems and cancer treatments

I have just been diagnosed with breast cancer. I was told that I had a small (but deep) cancerous lump that should be removed with a lumpectomy. I am seeing the consultant (associate) on Thursday when the results of the biopsy should be back and treatment discussed.
Today, by accident, I found that some cancer treatments can affect the heart. This really scares me as just over ten years ago I had a heart attack.
I wondered if anyone else has had this? Also is a mastectomy followed by the same drugs? And when I do see the cancer specialists do I have any choices?
I feel as if I am dreading the treatment and the consequences more than the disease itself.
I’d be really grateful for any advice.

Hi Daisymegan
Fully appreciate your fear - I felt the same last year. I have high blood pressure and read that some therapies held risks I wasn’t sure I wanted to take.
All I can say is the team treating me have been brilliant. They tailor treatments to your situation and keep a watchful eye. I had a mastectomy then chemo and was reassured at every step. I am now on Herceptin and my care includes 3 monthly echo cardiograms to check how my heart is doing - I now know it is not as bad as I thought it would be.
I have been able to ask what ever I need to - my oncologist never makes me feel rushed or stupid and I have felt in control in a way too.
Good luck with it all

Kahren

Thank you for the replies. I am so glad I found this website. I feel I now have the confidence to ask questions and realise there are many different options! I will be glad when Thursday is over and I have a better idea.
Thanks for the support.
