I have BC and DCIS in my right breast. Surgeon originally said mastectomy but then offered lumpectomy following examination. Reconstruction is not possible at the same time due to my bmi (gutted as I had gastric surgery 4 years ago, lost 6 stone but not enough for reconstruction).
So now I have to decide between lumpectomy and radiotherapy, or mastectomy. Either way I will lose my nipple.
I shouldn’t need chemotherapy at this stage, I’m told but it’s not completely off the cards.
I swing from feeling lucky it’s been caught now (routine mammogram) to feeling it’s the end of the world. All the feelings!
Surgeon suggested I lose more weight after surgery, then consider reconstruction.
I feel fortunate in that I’m 54, have 3 wonderful children and breastfed each of them.
Good morning @mrs_sunflower so sorry you are here with us You sound so positive already which is wonderful. We are all very lucky to have found it. Finding things is what keeps us alive
I was diagnosed on 3rd Nov and for weeks during the many tests and waiting periods I was convinced I would need a mastectomy. I couldnt focus on anything else. After examination my surgeon offered me a lumpectomy. It took some convincing to trust him. What I wanted most was the cancer gone.
I was lucky to have a nipple sparing lumpectomy but I accepted that it might not be possible once they got started.
I’ve seen lots of photos of women who lose their nipple and I have to say personally it just isnt something I was concerned about. Like you I’m past the age where my boobs/nipples are needed haha they’ve done their job and I’m very grateful.
There are lots of factors for you to consider and you might find it extra helpful to call the breast cancer now nurses. I dont know how to attach the number sorry but I’m sure someone will.
Big hugs and well done on getting your cancer free journey started
