Probiotics and chemo

I have started my chemo yet - still healing from the surgery. I was wondering if anyone has tried probiotics to help with the gastric discomfort of chemo?

I found this:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4583404/

and I think I will try it. If anyone else wants to try it the most researched brand that you can just buy over the counter is Culturelle. There is another one but you cannot get it in the UK that is Zarbees and widely available in the USA. I did a quick Google and did not find a UK distributor.

I have been on Google Scholar and a regime I am going to try is one Culturelle twice a day for at least 3 days before chemo and  continue throughout treatment plus no food on the day of chemo  before you have it. Apparently an empty stomach is easier to defend from the trots!

Hi there,

I was told not to take probiotics or things like live yoghurt on Chemo. This was in particular on the week when I could be prone to infection.

Have  a talk to your Oncologist and see what they think maybe?

(I take probiotics and live yoghurt normally. My gut has been severely affected by Chemo and this has got worse as it goes on. I did try a probiotics experiment away from my “infectious” week but had no improvement. Having no food on the day of treatment made the nausea and vomiting much worse for me)
