Hello
Is it ok to take probiotics in tablet form while on phesgo? I want to try them to get some healthy bacteria back into my gut as I’m still suffering with diarrhea post IV chemo. I’ve got another 9 Phesgo jabs to take, am on letrazole and due to have 3 weeks of radiotherapy shortly.
I also take atorvastatin and citalopram daily.
I noticed when I was at hospital today a poster saying don’t take probiotics if you are immune suppressed. Hence my question.
Thank you
Hi jayesse,
Thanks for your post asking about probiotics
Many people experience diarrhoea as a result of chemotherapy and it’s understandable you want to do as much as possible to be healthy. There is often the belief that these supplements are safe as they are considered natural. But there is much we don’t know them as they don’t have to comply with the same regulations or rigorous testing that conventional medicines do. For many products there is a lack of research to support their use, and some can interfere with conventional medicines including cancer treatments.
This American website, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, can provide you with more information about probiotics. It has sections on existing evidence and what known interaction there is with other medications.
You might also find the World Cancer Research Fund Cancer and Nutrition helpline helpful. You can speak to a dietician and ask them specifically about ways to improve your gut health alongside your cancer treatment.
We would always suggest you speak to your breast care nurse, treatment team, or a pharmacist before taking any supplements, especially as you have had recent chemotherapy and are still on other treatment which may affect your immune system. You don’t say when you finished your chemotherapy, but if the diarrhoea isn’t improving, its important your treatment team are aware so that any other causes can be explored.
