PROBLEMS WITH INFLAMMATION AFTER BRACHYTHERAPY

Hi,

I had a lumpectomy for stage 1 breast cancer followed with internal brachytherapy called “mammosite”

2 years ago.  I am now on hormone therapy for at least 5 years.   I keep having recurring inflammation in the radiated area that is very painful.  I’m just wondering if this is going to be an ongoing problem.  None of my doctors even mentioned that this could be a problem this far out.  I have also just recently been diagnosed with lymphedema.  Has anyone else had this kind of problem?  I thought that by now, the worst part would be over with.  This is becoming overwhelming.

Hi @SandyK

We’re sorry to hear how you’re feeling at the moment. Hopefully someone will come along soon to share their experience.

You may find it helpful to chat to our nurses about your recurring inflammation who can talk you through what you’re experiencing and any next steps you can take. You can chat to them on our free Helpline 0808 800 6000 and it’s open weekdays 9am-4pm and Saturdays 9am-1pm, please note it is closed 9 November.

In terms of your recent diagnosis of lymphoedema, you may find this booklet helpful. You can also search for ‘lymphoedema’ on this Forum as there are some discussions from others who have lymphoedema too.

Please do give us a call on our free Helpline if you have any questions at all.

Best wishes,
Laura at Breast Cancer Now
