Prosthesis following mastectomy

I had single mastectomy almost 10 weeks ago and went to be measured up for prosthesis last Thursday. I have been given silicone one on NHS but am finding it quite heavy and not particularly comfortable. I have used a softie occasionally since my surgery but a lot of the time I don’t wear a bra as my remaining breast is not that big. This does make me self conscious when I go out though and am wearing a scarf. Does anyone have any advice/suggestions for an alternative prosthesis, also a good crop top to wear. Many thanks.

Kittkat gave you tried knitted knockers? Also have a look at truelife in Sheffield for prosthesis alternatives to start with I used to stuff bra with cushion stuffing from a scatter cushion, found I could mould it and it was lot more comfortable hope tgst helps :two_hearts: :two_hearts: :sparkles: :sparkles: Shi xx

Hi @KittKat

I’m a big fan of M&S Bralettes, they come in a pack of 3, very comfortable and reasonably priced, and importantly for us they have removable pads so you can insert a prosthesis instead. Different colours are available, sizes are S, M or L, so I’d advise you to order a couple of different sizes to try.

I like Knitted Knockers, which you can order free from their website, a very quick and efficient service. But you might find your silicone one is more comfy in a bralette too.

Good luck and best wishes XX

Snap, I was at James Cook Hospital today.

My consultation took place in an actual cupboard full of junk.

No space for a seat just a mirror on a wall.

It was in main out patients yet women needing a prosthetic are directed to the corridor opposite the toilets.

I’m a 32D so she offered me one bra that fit.

Looked like something Hattie Jacques would of wore decades ago!

I refused it as my mother wouldn’t even wear it.

So ended up with wait for it a 34 DD.

The weight of this thing in a box will give me a bad back.

As for it being bespoke or special it’s in its huge box and I doubt a drag queen would wear such a heavy

Thing for a full set.

She said I could have a new one in year when the other breast shrivels no doubt due to lack of estrogen.

I was back out of the cupboard door in less than ten minutes.

It has AMOENA size 7 on the box what that means is a bad back for sure.

If someone wants a thing that people wore in the late 1980s beige and heavy called “chicken fillets” but these are bigger and far worse

You can have it.

I’m going back to M&S for some dignity and a specialist bra lady and time to spare!

Hi, another vote here for Knitted Knockers - highly recommend them. I’ve used them for years and wouldn’t go back. I’m small too and like to wear crop tops/bralets - I find the ones from Peacocks suit me best. I believe they are £6 or £7 each.

Good old M+S they have a foam thing that’s cut to fit into the slot behind the bra.

They are only ten pounds, but VAT comes off it too.

Picking a right or a left

Small medium large.

Plus you can always take it back if not suitable.

It looks fine even a nipple thing, I get small as I don’t like the end bit sticking in my armpit.

I think you need to be in a major city to see stock on display like Newcastle upon Tyne.

But you can order into a store for free try and give what’s not suitable back.

It’s sturdy not soft so was ok in a pool cos I got sick of waiting for something more suitable to arrive.

That’s the range done in store in major cities and on line too
