Prosthesis for swimming

Hi, can anyone recommend a prosthesis for regular swimming? I have worn my normal prosthesis up until now for the occasional swim but am not sure whether it will get damaged if I wear it too often.

I know that there are such things, but have not yet been fitted for my normal prosthesis. I was going to ask about a swimming one when I go.

Hi Rawlie
I bought one from amoena but it was £35 and im not sure it was worth it. Ive seen a thread on here before about swimming and some ladies have used their softie (and squeeze the water out with a swift arm movement as they leave the water!!)
Ive also read about a ‘beanie’ type thingy, but Ive only seen them free on ‘all about the girl’ site when you buy a cossie.
Good luck with your search, Im sure others will have some good ideas

Hi Ladies,

Whilst I was at my local centre for a complimentary therapy, I picked up a brochure - “Nicola Jane” and in there at the back were different prothesis that are available, one was a spongey type especially for swimming. I believe you can access “Nicola Jane” on the internet. Sorry don’t know about the pricing though. Hope this is of some help.

Hi there
I have posted the link to the BCC ‘A confident choice’ publication which contains information about various prostheses, you can read or order a copy via this link:

Hi
I have been swimming for 7 years with a sponge boob from NicolaJane in a swim suit from them with pockets. No one have ever realized.
All the best

Hi,

I use a normal boob enhancer thing from primark, cost about £2. Seems to do the job. I have a decent swimming cossie, well tankini with pockets it from Nicola Jane I think. Hold it’s shape pretty well even without prostethis in.

I was given sponge prosethes from my BCN for swimming. You can get them from Nicola Jane too. They’re called foam swim prosthesis and they’re £9.50 (they do free returns). nicolajane.com
Basically I was told to squash your arms against them when you get out of the water so you’re not sitting around with them full of water.

Hi, thanks for all your comments. I had looked on the Nicola Jane website but didn’t want to just order something without getting a few recommendations first!!

Hi, I have had my prosthesis for over 3 yrs now, and I use it in my swimming cossie, and rinse it out thoroughly to make sure no chlorine is left in it and it is still perfect!! It is the one I was given on the NHS, an Amoena natura, and I have an amoena swimming suit too, and it feels very secure (I swim in a fun pool, with waves, currents, spas the lot!)and have never been in danger of it falling out!
I know they suggest using a special ‘swim’ one, but honestly, if you are looking to save money, my normal one has lasted the course, even with swimming frequently, and I just use it for day to day wear too.
Hope this is of help,

Hi

I have tried the softie swim prosthesis and personally didn’t like having to squeeze it out on exiting the pool, also if you are on holiday and leave the pool to sunbath, some of my darker swimsuits showed a wet patch around the softie as that took longer to dry than the costume itself.

I used to have the clear hollow silicone swimming prosthesis which worked really well (cost about £30) but then went on to buy the ‘horseshoe’ type which is a really good shape for my amoena tankini which has a straight top edge and also fits my bikinis well as you can match the straight edge of the prosthesis with the straight edge of the bikini (you know where it makes a V shape at the centre of your chest).

Hi all

I go swimmming and use a nicola jane leisure prosthesis, it ia a weighted foam one. Yes you do have to give it a aqueeze when you are coming out of the water but it works fine for me. I have been in fun pools with rapids and down flumes etc and it is quite secure. I have a bean a boob but dont really like it. The shape isnt very good though it is quite comfy during hot weather when I find my silicone prostheses very hot and heavy. I havent used it for swimming though it does say you can.

Love to all

I have a swimming prosthesis from Amoena which is very light, in fact I wear it in the daytime as well as still very tender after mastectomy.

Went for my first post mastectomy swim last weekend. I think perhaps the one I got is too small, getting another one to use at home (left the first one for use at our caravan) so may go for a larger size. Did find I had to squeeze the boob out everytime I got out of the water, tried to do it inconspicuously with my arm! Must have looked quite amusing.
