Prothesis size

Hello

I’m diagnosed with DCIS with microinvasion. It’s a large area 58mm and right under my nipple. I’m 35, no kids so no breastfeeding (I don’t want them so no concern about being able to do it in the future)

Whichever surgery I choose I’m losing most of my breast and the nipple. Whilst I’ve talked with my nurse about potentially using prothesis to make up the difference when wearing bras.

I am concerned if they even come in my size? I wear a 32J currently. I’ve been told that if I go for a mastectomy with implant my breast will be about a 32C. So would need to make up 9 cup sizes with a prothesis.

Are prosthesis even available in that sort of size? I know I’m already unusual in my cup size being small backed and big cupped. I’m really attached to my size/ being big chested I’ve always loved them. But if a prosthesis isn’t going to actually even me out and for example only get me to F for example, and just make me less unequal then maybe I need to think more about reducing my other one.

I asked about a double mastectomy but I’ve been told that they won’t do it. Because it’s not clinically needed. Even though if I have a reduction to match they have to take away 75% anyway.

So are the prosthesis on the NHS only available in standard sizing, if so realistically do they come large/projected enough to balance me out? Or is it actually tailor made/bespoke?

My nurse is away on holiday for a couple of weeks so thought I’d ask here.

Hi letsdothis1

Thank you for your post.

It’s understandable that you want to explore the different options available for breast prothesis, whether you decide to have a mastectomy or breast conserving surgery.

There are a number of companies that offer bespoke prosthesis. You can contact woman zone, who offer custom made breast prosthesis for those who undergo a full mastectomy or breast conserving surgery. Boost is a company that offers lightweight breast prostheses, although their website doesn’t go up to a J cup, they offer advice and fittings over the phone and may be able to accommodate your sizing.

Knitted knockers also offer a lightweight breathable prosthesis, which some women find are more comfortable. Although on their website you can only order up to a size HH, they do say they offer all sizes so you could contact them for advice.

Depending on where you live, you may also be interested in the Bra Lounge at Future Dreams House, they offer a private fitting service for bras and prostheses.

When your nurse returns from leave, she will also be able to advise you about the prosthesis options available in your area.

We offer a range of free supportive services which you may be interested in. They include face to face and online courses and events. We also have a speakers live session in November on body image which may be of interest to you.
