Questions for a first time referral

Good evening,

I have an appointment at a one-stop clinic next week to get an ugly unwanted guest checked out and I have a couple of practical-type questions I wondered if anyone could help with. The information I was sent says it might take up to 4 hours - are they just covering themselves or could it really be that point? Also, if I have to have an FNA/biopsy, does it hurt for a while afterwards? Is wearing a bra likely to be painful? While I’m glad it’s being checked out I suppose I’m not thrilled it’s the day before my birthday!

I know a lot of you wonderful people have more important things to worry about, but at the moment the practical stuff is all I can let myself worry about or I might lose it.

Hi Catetoo

Welcome to the BCC Forum.  While you are waiting for some replies from fellow members, I have attached a link to one of our publications which I thought might be helpful.  It has some information about what might happen at your breast clinic appointment.

www2.breastcancercare.org.uk/sites/default/files/your_breast_clinic_appointment.pdf

We also have a free Helpline which you could call to talk things over.  They can offer practical information and emotionall support.  The number is 0808 800 6000 and the opening times are 9-5 on weekdays and 10-2 on Saturdays.

Very best wishes

Hi Catetoo,

We are both in the same boat. I go on Monday and am going insane with the wait. From what I understand it can take up to the 4 hours it depends on what the examination and scans reveal. At least we will get results on the same day. At the moment it’s being stuck in limbo.

I wish you all the best for your appointment x

Hello ladies

I’m sorry to hear you’re going through this worry at the moment. The clinic gives a time of up to 4 hours to cover any procedures they may have to do plus any waiting around which could happen.  When I was called back after a routine mammogram I had to wait a while to be called then had another mammogram to the breast that showed up some density at the first one. I then had to wait for the doctor to have a look at it before being called in to see him. He carried out an ultrasound scan which didn’t hurt then did a biopsy under local anaesthetic. The biopsy didn’t hurt at all and I had no pain afterwards. I was advised what to look out for in case of infection but I was fine.  At the end of my appointment I was given a date and time to return the following week for the results. Unfortunately my results showed I did have BC. I wasn’t given the grade or stage until after surgery.

It is the waiting that is the hardest part, your mind goes into overdrive.  There were other ladies at the clinic who didn’t have BC and went away reassured.  My call back letter did say that more ladies who go for tests don’t have BC than do.

I really hope you both get good news.  Don’t think your fears are less important Catetoo than anyone else’s, there are lots of us here who have been where you are now and completely understand what you’re going through at the moment.

Take care and very good wishes to you

Kathy

Thanks so much mary32 and kathy03 for taking the time to reply. Definitely helpful. Im sorry you’ve had to go through so much. In my case the GP said the usual it’s probably a cyst, so hopefully I won’t have to be there for too long. And hopefully they can drain it so I can go back to having a normal-looking breast! I might take a book though if as you say the waiting can take a while.

Hi RaKing, sorry you’re waiting as well. I’m trying to schedule in as much fun stuff as possible in between now and the appointment! Good luck on Monday.

Good luck tomorrow Tulips5. Will be thinking of you. I hope you get the outcome we all hope for x
