Radiotherapy after Reconstruction

Can anyone tell me if they have had radiotherapy after a pedicled TRAM reconstruction. I have been told that I may have to have radiotherapy but have read that it is not a good idea after reconstruction. HELP!

Hi Annie

I had a mastectomy and immediate LD reconstruction last year. I then had chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I have had no problems with having the radiotherapy after reconstruction. When I went back to see the plastic surgeon he was quite pleased. He did say that sometimes the reconstructed breast can harden up a bit.
Hope this helps.

Hi Annie
I had mastectomy and immediate recon (Tram) in July and just started radiotherapy this week. i have to have 25 sessions.
I asked and was told no problem. so far so good. It’s been easy compared to chemo. Breast is a bit red but I keep rubbing in the cream they gave me.

Only side effect is tiredness - but that may be the round trip of 2hours on top of radio. 5 down - 20 to go!!

Good luck

Thanks for your messages. They now tell me I don’t need radiotherapy. Mixed feelings for me as although I am pleased, there are doubts in my head as to whether the decision is the correct one. Only time will tell I suppose. It’s been a tough year, but roll on 2008!!!
