Radiotherapy booster

Hi, I will be starting radiotherapy in the next few weeks, 5 sessions on consecutive days but my consultant mentioned I could have another 5 sessions (so 10 consecutive sessions) but the benefit was minimal. So it’s up to me…has anyone here been offered these boosters? and if so what was your decision and how did you come to it as at the moment I don’t know whether to have them or not. Thanks C

Dear Cazzie,

Wishing you lots of luck, with your treatment, I had 15 sessions, but understand now they are offer 5 sessions haven’t heard about the extra 5, but feel sure someone will come on the forum who has.

Don’t forget to drink plenty of water and lots of moisturiser.

I had 15 sessions then 5 boosters, some years ago. Was no problem at all. I think the boosters are more targeted and the others cover a wider area. Best wishes

Hi
I had 9 sessions, 5 plus 4 boosters. The 5 were for the whole breast, the boosters were targeted to where the tumour was sited. Just quicker really.

Hi
I had 5 radiotherapy sessions followed by 4 boosters that were targeted to an area of possible concern as I had problems with adequate margins on the anterior(skin) side of the surgery. I don’t think it made me feel any different to having just had the 5 - my skin was fine and the fatigue I had was quite limited so as radiotherapy is a one shot deal I felt reassured i did everything i could to treat the area.
Hope that helps

I had 15 fractions plus 4 boosters last year. I have had quite a few late effects - breast oedema and cording. A couple of my margins were zero though, hence the recommendation. So I think it would be reasonable to consider what your margins were and if DCIS or LCIS was present too.

My anterior margin was also extremely small but my oncologist said having the boosters would make v v little difference when weighing up against risks/side effects
Did your oncologist say it would make a big difference? Maybe we have different types of cancer also?
