Radiotherapy conflicting advice

I’m 77 - mid December I had a single mastectomy (after 2 lumpectomies). Grade 3 2/23 nodes positive. In the end my tumour had a spread of 127mm but margins were finally clear. I had my oncology consultation on 6th December and was told he would not recommend radiotherapy for me due to side effects vs benefits. An opinion reinforced at a later phone consult. I am not quite half way through chemo due to further delays. My oncologist (also a radiotherapy specialist) was new to our Trust and has now left it suddenly. Im being told that no other oncologist would agree about the radiotherapy. Has anyone else been told that radiotherapy would be unnecessary ? I assumed my age was a consideration but we never even discussed it beyond what Ive said here. Feeling devastated.

Hi @twink1 , are you upset because you feel you’ve been given the wrong advice or because you think you will now have to have radiotherapy ?

Might be something you could talk through with your breast cancer nurse and/or the Breast Cancer Now nurses either on the forum or on their helpline ?

Ask our Nurses your questions

I just did phone BCN nurse. It was because I’d been very happy to becadvised against it - but she’s prepared me for an uphill struggle against NICE guidelines! She thought it had been an unusual call on the consultant’s part…

I see so you would prefer not to have radiotherapy as originally advised ?

The onco had convinced me it wasnt worth it and O was looking forward to an end to all the knives and toxic stuff on August Bank Holiday ( The date of my first lumpectomy last year)

Just disappointed maybe and wondering if others had had same original advice as I did

Just did - BCN nurse surprised at my original plan - talked me through NICE advice and maybe a way to get an independent clinical onco 2nd opinion if I wanted reassurance… :woman_shrugging:t2:

That’s good . Having any treatment is ultimately your choice . Sounds like it’s been a long slog for you .
