Hi. I started 5 sessions of whole breast radiotherapy 2 weeks ago, I finished a week ago. I have had no hint of any skin reaction yet. Is it possible this could occur at a later date or have I just been fortunate? And when can I stop moisturising? Thank you
Hi yvonne1,
Thank you for posting.
Skin reactions are a common side effect from radiotherapy, they can sometimes occur after radiotherapy finishes, commonly up to 14 days after treatment. Some people do also experience changes to how the breast looks or feels several months after radiotherapy, this is often called late side effects. Not everyone will experience a skin reaction, so it is possible that you may not go on to develop any problems.
There is no specific timeframe for stopping moisturising the skin, as everyone’s skin is different. You may find the information sheet from the Society and College of Radiographers helpful to read. You can also contact your breast care nurse to discuss how your skin is feeling and if they’d recommend continuing to apply a moisturiser. Your skin can continue to feel tight or sensitive after finishing radiotherapy and some people choose to continue applying a moisturiser long term.
