Radiotherapy - throat issues??

Hello everyone,

Rads 9/20 done today, traffic not too bad, but round trip to the hospital taking at least 3 hours each day!  I had my review today, ok I guess, though the Macmillan nurse was very dismissive of my tight throat, difficulty swallowing and slight feeling of nausea and a bit of soreness.  She said there were a lot of colds going round, I said it doesnt feel like any cold or sore throat I have ever had, I have no temperature, and my glands aren’t up - all the usual markers of an infection of some sort.  This feeling in my throat started last week after treatment 3, it subsided over the weekend (I had 4 days off over Easter) then it started again on Tuesday after treatment, and I still have it now.  Too much of a coincidence for me to feel that it is nothing to do with treatment.  I would be very interested to know if anyone else has had any issues like this with their throat during treatment, I am going to see how it goes after tomorrows treatment and over the weekend, then I may ask to see a Dr at the hospital next week if it doesn’t resolve itself.  Hope everyone is getting on ok with their treatments. Barbara x x

Hi Barbara, lady today has throat probs and being treated. I am only day 2 but my throat feels dry. I agree you should see a doc. Don’t leave anything, we know our bodies. Travelling must be a pain but we don’t get much choice do we. During rads we see our onc every week. Let us know how you get on. Happy travelling lol xxxxx

Hi babtastic could it be something like silent reflux? I don’t start my rads until Monday but I’m currently suffering from difficulty in swallowing - particularly hot drinks, feel like I have a lump in my throat and occasional nausea. I do suffer from acid reflux and I suspect that this is what is causing it.

By chance the other day I found on line the leaflet the Beatson (?) hospital give to their rads patients which mentions that you can get heartburn as a side effect. Now I don’t know if reflux and heartburn are the same thing but they could be connected?

Forgot to say look up oesophagitis and see if the symptoms match. That’s definitely what I’ve got! I’m seeing my GP next week and will be asking for some omeprazole

Sorry to but in, ive just hasd onc appt & scan is tomorrow but my onc did mention dry cough as a side effect. That could be what you are getting,     julsx
