Radiotherapy to Diep

I had a Diep reconstruction 14 years ago and have had a reoccurrence just to the side last year, lumpectomy, chemo. I am about to have radiotherapy to my breast and inner mamnary chain. Will it cause any harm to my Diep?

I had immediate diep reconstruction Feb 2024 and got radiotherapy roughly 5 months after the surgery, in July 2024. It doesn’t seem to have caused any issues, had one checkup with the plastic surgeon in December and I have another scheduled for March this year just to see what the final result is but I haven’t felt anything concerning.

Hi luckyduck1

Thank you for posting.

You explain having had a recurrence last year and it’s understandable you would like to know whether the radiotherapy is likely to affect your DIEP reconstruction.

Radiotherapy after surgery can sometimes affect the appearance of a DIEP reconstruction, which may mean you need more surgery in the future. The radiotherapy can cause changes to the reconstructed tissue. It might lead to skin tightening, hardening of the tissue and texture or changes to the size of the reconstructed breast. But as @ngt mentions her radiotherapy didn’t seem to harm her reconstruction.
