First radiotherapy session later today. Advice and tips please .. which Aveeno moisturiser did others find good. GP said to use aloe Vera but only after treatment ends. Planning on driving myself - have I got this right that tiredness only kicks in after a week.
Fragrance-free options like Aveeno Skin Relief or the Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion (Fragrance-Free) are best utilized after radiation therapy to soothe sensitive and delicate skin.
Always choose the plain, unscented version. Scented lotions contain chemicals and perfumes that can severely irritate radiation-treated skin.
Good luck today. Hope it goes well for you. I had 5 sessions in Jan 2024 after chemo, lumpectomy, starting endocrine therapy and during Kadcyla for triple positive ductal IDC. I used Moogoo Skin Milk Udder Cream. I put it on an hour or more before each session to give it time to dry and then again when I got home and when I went to bed too -2/3x a day for a few weeks and then daily for as long as you feel you need it. A fellow chemo warrior I met advised me to get it and I found it t be excellent and I didn’t suffer any skin side effects, bar a bit of redness and soreness like sunburn. Nothing too major at all and my skin did not break down.
I had a 5 day course of whole breast radiotherapy.
I tend to burn easily so I bought Flamigel RT off Amazon. I used straight after session and a few times a day for about 4 weeks. Whatever you use make sure you get right under your bust and a wider area than you think they have treated.
I also drank as much water as could, propped my arm on a cushion when sat down to keep my arm away from my boob, wore a thin cotton bra to let the heat out and took ibuprofen at bedtime. I had a fridge temperature Mr Bump cool pack which I popped in my bra when things felt warm. A wet washcloth in a plastic bag kept in the fridge would also work.
I tend to burn easily too - have had a few episodes in the past … but not of course on my breasts (!) You’re not wrong about the wider area, so thanks for this. At my session, I asked to see on screen where they were doing to radiation. I think that’s worth doing as it has translated to the areas that I am going to moisture. It is right around the side under my arms, and very high up at the front, well above the bra area and onto the breastbone above. So. now I know. Think th tips about wet washcloth a really good idea too.
Hi, I suspect it doesn’t matter too much what moisturiser you use as long as it’s unscented & you use it regularly. I had been moisturising regularly twice a day before my radiotherapy started for some time because of fine cording that I developed after surgery , from my scar & across my chest & upper abdomen. I used the cheap moisturising liquid from Lidl at the time. They don’t seem to sell it anymore near me so I got some E45 later but preferred the former. I had the maximum 15 sessions of radiotherapy most areas & 5 extra as a tumour base boost. The staff commented that my skin was in great condition during the treatment. Keeping the skin cool can help. I was given some Kerralite Cool by the hospital [ Oxford] which are Moisture Balancing Hydrogel Dressings, in case I needed them, as I live a distance from the Dept. They cooled the skin but you could also put them in the fridge for extra coolness. I only used a few.
I was a little tired but not at the time of the treatment. I drove myself to most of my appointments as it was easier.
Wishing you well with your treatment.
