Hi Jal, sorry can’t advise you other than to say get gp to have a look if it’s still there. I’ve only been on tamox for a few weeks and haven’t as yet noticed a rash. There are different makes of tamox but active ingriedient - tamoxifen - is the same. It’s the added ingridients that can vary so guess you could be allergic to one of them. What makes do youhave/have had in past?
Hope someone can help you more. Take care,
Pat x

I got a rash on my tummy only when I had been on Tamoxifen for about 3 weeks. It stayed for about a month to some degree. Sometimes spots would go then new ones would appear. I did show the BCN and asked if they were a side effect of Tamoxifen and was told no but I don’t know what else could have caused them. They have gone now although some marks on the skin remain. Hope this helps. LooLoo x

Hi Jal,
can’t help you with the rash, but been on tamoxifen for 2 years. about 3 months ago saw my consultant and he changed it to nolvadex. which has really helped with my hot flushes. i was waking up 4 or 5 times a night absolutley soaking in sweat. now i get very mild flushes, but saying that it is warm at the moment anyway.
never had a rash, have put about half a stone on with tamoxifen, even though i still run acouple of times a week, oh well only another 3 years. at least my heavy periods have stopped (i’m 43)

Hi Jal, I have been on tamoxifen for about 3 months and when I have a hot flush I have a rash on my arms and backs of my hands. I start to itch and it is not very comfortable at all, when I have a bath I start to itch and go rashy too. I also feel as if I am putting weight on, even though I am careful what I eat. I am feeling weepy easily. I feel the side effects are getting worse as time goes on, I felt fine for the first couple of months. My diagnosis date is one year today. Take care junieliz

I have been on Tamoxifen for 6 weeks and rash on arms started after five weeks. Now have it all over my body and it’s constantly itchy. Stopped Tamoxifen 2days ago. GP has given me Piriton and the info in the box says can cause itchy skin rashes and puffy face which i have got. I am very weepy, can’t sleep and dread going back on it or alternative.

Hi,
This is my first time sharing information and requesting information.
I am 62 have had a mastectomy and finished chemo in February 2009. In March I began with tamoxifen. About a month ago I started with a rash on my stomach and it has moved to my legs and arms. It’s a light rash and is not terribly bothersome. But my feet and ankles are huge. I have lots of drug sensitivities. I also have hot flashes.

I am a tennis player and swimmer and this is really annoying.

I am concerned about switching to a different medication because I will probably have a different reaction. The devil you know…

I am having a biopsy of the rash at the end of the month.

Any opinions, suggestions or advice is welcome.

Thanks mlkesem

i would recommend that anybody developing a rash should contact their GP… rashes can be the first indication of a more serious allergic reaction.

all medication is provided with a patient information leaflet… usually it will say that if you have a rash or itching or other allergic type reactions such as shortness of breath or swelling lips to stop it immediately and seek medical advice

i wouldnt continue taking it unless you have seen your gp or consultant.

Hi everyone,

I’ve been on Nolvadex for 9 months now (after mx, FEC and radio)and for the last month have been developing a pink rash over my arms and tummy like you have also described. It’s quite pale and the skin isn’t broken but it’s incredibly itchy.

I gave in and went to see my gP last week. he’s given me emollient creams and anti-histamine tablets which work a bit but I’m still itching. He also said it may be a SE of Tx (no, really!!) and suggested I might want to change to AI’s - Aaaaaaagh, no way do I want to change to AI’s after the worse SEs they seem to give.

Has anyone got any suggestions for helping with the itching? I don’t want to give up taking TX if I can help it but certainly can’t put up with this for another 4 years 3 months!!

Hi All
Have been reading all your posts with interest as i am about to leave prescript in for tamox but was asked what brand i wanted APS etc as there is several! Can anyone advise me as to what brand they are on and how you are finding it please…x

Hi Rosie,

I specifically asked for Nolvadex after doing my own research on here and the Internet about additives and allergic reactions. My gp was happy to prescribe it even though it costs a little more than generic Tamoxifen. The only problem is, it’s about to go out of production as Astra Zenica’s 5 year licence has just expired so I’ll have to go onto another brand as soon as supplies run out.

Up until this rash developed I was relatively OK on it. I had hot flushes, which started on chemo, which I could deal with as I knew the drug was working. I’ve had a couple of horrid periods, which again, turns out to be normal. But this rash is very annoying. I think, from my more recent internet trawls, it’s due to the effect of ‘lack of oestrogen’ which is caused by the Tamoxifen, so my skin is drying out causing irritation. Therefore, any other brand, or any other drug which blocks oestrogen, will ultimately have the same effect. It looks like it’s one of the many small prices I have to pay…
