Rcently diagnosed with DCIS

Hello,
I had a screening mammogram in September and was subsequently diagnosed with DCIS. After the initial shock I was feeling positive. I have been offered a lumpectomy with a reconstruction or a mastectomy. I have chosen a lumpectomy, but since receiving my letter on Saturday, I am now beginning to panic as the letter states it measures 46mm!
I am not sure if that is the DCIS or the area to be removed with clear margins. If it is the DCIS then should I choose the mastectomy as it’s so large?
During my initial appointment with my surgeon, the size was not mentioned but I thought it was small clusters.
I am meeting with him again tomorrow but I am not sure what to ask or whether to change my mind.
Thank you

Hi - I hope your consultation went well. I have also been recently diagnosed with High Grade DCIS - measuring 68mm. Like you I had trouble getting my head round the size of it! I was given the option of a Therapeutic Mammoplasty plus radiotherapy - which I took and am booked in for the surgery on 4 November. I think it was suitable as I am ‘generously breasted’. Let me know how you got on.

I think it’s the overall area of the DCIS but I could be wrong . I was diagnosed in August with High grade DCIS and a tiny invasive grade 2 which is her + . I opted for mastectomy and the pathology revealed 154mm of DCIS ! My surgeon explained it was in clusters through my whole breast but that it’s classed as pre cancer , however in my case they found seperate invasive cancers all under 1cm but it means I’m having chemo and herceptin in November.
