Hi, its my first time of posting even though this site has given me lots of support and useful information throughout my ‘journey’.
2 weeks ago I had a nipple and skin sparing mastectomy and immediate reconstruction with an expanding implant for widespread DCIS. Luckily the lymph nodes sampled were clear and there was no evidence of invasive disease (yay ). Unfortunately there was evidence of a remaining duct containing HG DCIS behind the spared nipple so my surgeon has recommended removing the nipple. I was so pleased at the initial appearance of my reconstructed breast with my own nipple that I am finding it hard to come to terms with losing it - even though it is probably the most sensible route to take.
Has anyone else had a similar experience? ie. removal of nipple as a second op following mastectomy, and if so can you give me any feedback about the experience. Thank you
Hi, I didn’t have my nipple removed as a second op but I did have my nipple removed when I had my mastectomy 9 weeks ago. I also had reconstruction and my surgeon did a reconstructed nipple at the same time which I am very happy with. Is this what they are planning to do for you once they have removed your nipple?
Hi,
I had my nipple only (and a little bit behind) removed when I had my 1st cancer 12 years ago. I was never offered any sort of reconstruction but it was fine. I could wear normal clothes and padded bras evened it out. I also did go bralesss in vest tops in the summer and it wasn’t really noticeable.
A second cancer has meant a mastectomy with no reconstruction option so I’ve done it the other way round.
Hi Beachcomber
In answer to your question I am doing OK although I wouldn’t say that I’m back to normal. I had LD flap reconstruction and I still have some discomfort on my back and on the side under my arm but my boob and nipple do look good. My consultant said it can take up to a year to feel completely normal again. I’m going back to work next week and am expecting to feel tired and will probably get some backache but I do feel ready to go back.
When will you be having your nipple removal?
